About us

UCL Laws’ rich heritage reaches back to the very beginnings of UCL. A year after founding in 1827, John Austin and Andrew Amos were appointed to UCL’s first Chairs in Jurisprudence and English Law, teaching notable figures like the philosopher John Stuart Mill. UCL Laws has always been a pioneer in legal academia; the first faculty of common law in the country, we were the first university to offer degrees in English, rather than civil law, and in 1888 Eliza Orme, the first woman to obtain a law degree in England, graduated. We continue to provide some of the finest research-led thinking and education on law anywhere in the world. UCL Laws achieved 1st place ranking in the REF 2021 for research quality, is ranked 2nd in the UK for studying Law in the Complete University Guide Subject League Tables 2026, and 10th in the world for Law in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025 by Subject.

The department of European and International Social and Political Studies (EISPS) is a multidisciplinary unit centred around the delivery of three undergraduate degrees, with a developing culture of research on European and international affairs and area studies. It is housed within UCL’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities, bringing together the humanities and social sciences, with strengths in European and international politics, history, law and philosophy, alongside a strong commitment to language teaching. EISPS offers highly selective degrees which aim to equip students with a rigorous multidisciplinary understanding of international and European affairs, grounded in a chosen disciplinary specialism and complemented by advanced language proficiency.

About the role

We are looking to appoint as Lecturer one or more outstanding candidate(s) who can contribute to UCL’s development and advancement of world-leading teaching and research in law and politics. The postholder’s research home will be in the Faculty of Laws; teaching duties will be split across Laws and EISPS. Teaching will include core modules offered by UCL Laws in EU Law and in Public International Law, for students on non-law programmes, and elective interdisciplinary modules offered by EISPS, shaped by their expertise and research interests.

We are keen for applications from a diverse range of scholars: those who take socio-legal, comparative, doctrinal, empirical, historical, and/or theoretical approaches; those who adopt interdisciplinary approaches; and/or those who approach EU and Public International Law through economic analysis of law and intersecting legal subject areas.

About you

Successful candidates will be expected to engage in world leading research and contribute to UCL’s development and advancement of an interdisciplinary approach to EU Law / Public International Law, political science and other areas of law falling within their subject expertise. They will contribute to all aspects of the academic life of the Faculty and University.

Applicants should possess excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, a strong sense of teamwork, the ability to work harmoniously with colleagues and students of all cultures and backgrounds, and a demonstrable commitment to UCL’s Equal Opportunity Policy.

UCL’s Academic Career Framework sets out four ‘domains’ of activity for teaching and research posts (Research; Education; Enterprise and External Engagement; and Institutional Citizenship). Appointments to a Lecturer post are expected to make a balanced contribution across all four domains; the key requirements under each are outlined in the Job Description and Person Specification.
