Lecturer or Associate Professor in Maritime Engineering

Lecturer or Associate Professor in Maritime Engineering

The Marine, Autonomy and Robotic Systems (MARS) group at UCL's Department of Mechanical Engineering is internationally recognised for its contributions to the marine and naval sectors through world-leading research, consultancy, and education. Our work addresses key themes including marine autonomy and automation, clean maritime technologies, and resilient ocean environments. We have secured significant funding from UKRI, the Lloyd’s Register Foundation, the European Commission, and other national and international partners. Our research has informed policy, driven innovation, and earned accolades from leading marine and maritime societies.

MARS also plays a central role in education, delivering distinctive and highly regarded programmes in Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture. These programmes equip graduates with the skills and knowledge to meet the evolving needs of the maritime sector.

We are now seeking to appoint an academic in Maritime Engineering to help expand our research portfolio and contribute to teaching in this strategically important and fast-developing field.

About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join UCL’s Department of Mechanical Engineering as Lecturer (Grade 8) or Associate Professor (Grade 9) in Maritime Engineering. The successful candidate will be research-focused and expected to develop a dynamic research programme that integrates cutting-edge technologies with our world-class experimental and computational facilities.

You will contribute to the full breadth of maritime and ocean engineering, helping to strengthen UCL’s global leadership in this area. We welcome applicants whose expertise spans a wide range of topics, including:

  • Naval architecture
  • Hydrodynamics
  • Marine systems engineering
  • Port and coastal infrastructure
  • Marine zero-carbon technologies

You will collaborate closely with colleagues in the MARS Group and across UCL, contributing to our strategic research themes and delivering high-quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. You will also engage with industry, research councils, and policy stakeholders to translate research into real-world impact.

About You

We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate:

  • A PhD/EngD in naval architecture, maritime engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field
  • Strong foundational knowledge of the discipline
  • A track record of high-quality publications and successful research funding
  • Experience in undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching
  • A commitment to mentoring students and early-career researchers
  • Industry experience and strong professional networks
  • A collaborative approach and a commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion

Experience in leading positive culture change within a discipline or organisation is desirable and will strengthen your application.

UCL is committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and are dedicated to ensuring equal access to opportunities for all.
