Lecturer, Portuguese (JR #102643)
The School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (SLLC) at the University of Maryland, College Park, invites applications for a full-time (40 hours) professional-track faculty position as a Lecturer in Portuguese. The successful candidate will teach up to three Portuguese and/or Spanish language courses a semester at the elementary and intermediate levels. In addition to teaching, responsibilities include supporting student engagement and recruitment, coordinating signature events for the Portuguese Program, overseeing student awards, and collaborating in program development. We welcome applicants with a range of teaching experiences, community engagement interests, and a commitment to fostering an inclusive and vibrant program. We seek candidates whose teaching and service have prepared them to contribute to the four pillars of the ARHU Strategic Plan: Transformative Thinking; Boundless Creativity; Expansive Empathy; and Meaningful Futures. Contributions toward those goals and values might include leadership in teaching, mentoring, or service towards building an equitable and inclusive scholarly environment and/or increasing access or participation of all individuals equitably and fairly.
Lecturers who teach two or more courses per term are benefits-eligible. This search is contingent upon the availability of funds.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Master’s degree in the field of instruction or related field
Experience: Demonstrated successful teaching at the college level and/or relevant professional experience
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSAs)
• Evidence of successful language teaching.
• Demonstrated ability to engage with, support, and motivate student learning.
• Strong organizational skills with capacity to manage program activities and outreach.
• Self-driven, creative, and collaborative approach to program development and student engagement.
Preferences: Candidates with: demonstrated ability to teach Spanish language courses; provide translation and interpretation services; and/or begin the position on January 22, 2026.
