Assistant Professor of Public Administration

Job Description:

Our Online NASPAA-accredited Master of Public Administration (MPA) program provides an engaged learning environment emphasizing both practical and theoretical concepts of public administration. SUU is a leader in experiential learning, and the MPA program encourages high-impact learning practices throughout the curriculum to bridge theory and practice.

Southern Utah University invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Public Administration. This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track position to begin August 16, 2024. The first consideration of applications will begin May 1, 2024. The position will remain open until filled.

Duties and Responsibilities:

SUU is primarily a teaching university and the successful hire is expected to teach 12 credit hours each semester. We are seeking an engaging Assistant Professor who can teach a variety of online courses in our Master of Public Administration program. While the ability to teach general courses in public administration is essential, we are also looking for a candidate who is interested in working with community partners and providing our students with opportunities for experiential learning. Most of our students are in-service professionals, therefore a candidate with formal job experience as a practitioner in the government or nonprofit sector is preferred. MPA courses are offered online, so the candidate will be expected to teach high quality courses in the online environment. Candidates may also have the opportunity to teach undergraduate Political Science courses as needed. Teaching experience at the university level is valued, especially experience teaching online.

In addition to teaching, our MPA Program emphasizes community engagement, so that our students actively work with community partners in the Intermountain West and beyond. The ideal candidate would be passionate about developing projects and relationships with local and state governments that impact both our students and our communities. Remote teaching candidates who can still meet these objectives will be considered.

Southern Utah University's Carnegie Classification is registered as a "Master's Colleges and Universities: Larger Programs (M1)." Accordingly, under SUU Policy 2.0, the successful hire will be expected to keep current in the field by attending and presenting in professional forums and contributing to the scholarly discourse regularly.

The successful hire will for example:

  1. Possess the academic qualifications to teach Public Administration Graduate Courses.
  2. Advise MPA students in the major as well as help facilitate projects, internship ideas, and employment opportunities as needed.
  3. Participate in planning events to assist with student recruitment and student/alumni engagement both online and in person as needed.
  4. Provide an ongoing assessment of course offerings and degree requirements.
  5. Develop course content, objectives, and evaluation systems for course offerings in the online modality.
  6. Participate in the SUU Center for Teaching Innovation training courses as needed.
  7. Make recommendations for equipment, texts, audio-visual materials, reference materials, etc., to support program instruction.
  8. Carry out committee and/or special assignments upon the request of the Program Director, Department Chair, or Dean of the College.
  9. Attend staff meetings for purposes of curriculum development, procedures, schedules, dissemination of information, and evaluation.
  10. Perform all other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  1. Ph.D. or terminal degree in Public Administration or a closely related field in hand by August 15, 2024.
  2. Teaching and scholarship. University, college, or department service and leadership in Public Administration or equivalent professional leadership in a closely related field is preferred.
  3. Community service.
  4. A demonstrated history of service and volunteerism.
  5. Significant practitioner experience will be considered a plus.
  6. Following Utah State Code 53A-3-410, appointment to this position is contingent upon the successful passing of a background check.
