Overview
Princeton University Library seeks a motivated and reliable individual to join the Stack Maintenance & Paging Services team located in Firestone Library. The primary responsibility of this position is to reshelve library materials according to the Library of Congress classification system and help maintain library collections in a neat and orderly condition.
This position reports to the Supervisor of Stack Maintenance and Paging Services and works as part of a collaborative team. Consistent productivity, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple tasks are essential.
While some flexibility is possible, the normal work schedule is Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. Occasional temporary schedule adjustments may be required.
Responsibilities
- Participate in daily floor pick-ups, collecting library materials used within the building and scanning items into Alma, the library’s management system.
- Sort returns and new materials onto book trucks, arranging items in proper order.
- Shelve materials in assigned areas, ensuring items remain in correct sequence and shelves are orderly.
- Perform weekly checks of assigned lockers and/or graduate study rooms for misplaced library materials.
- Assist Firestone Circulation with paging requests for Book Pick-Up Service.
- Shelf-read assigned areas to ensure materials remain in proper order.
- Assist with shifting and pulling materials to alleviate space constraints when needed.
- Provide basic directional assistance to library patrons and refer them to service desks when appropriate.
Qualifications
Required qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Basic math skills (ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide without the aid of a calculator)
- Ability to sort efficiently in alphabetic and numeric order and develop a working understanding of the Library of Congress classification system
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
- Ability to communicate effectively in person and in writing
- Ability to prioritize work to meet deadlines
- Basic computer skills, including email and Microsoft Windows; ability to learn the library’s automated system
- Must pass a Physical Capacity Test (see physical requirements below)
Preferred qualifications
- Prior library experience
- Knowledge of the Library of Congress classification system or equivalent
Physical Requirements
- stand or walk 2-4 hours at one time for 6-8 hours per day;
- sit for less than 2 hours per day;
- climbing a short footstool;
- lift or carry up to 10 pounds constantly (more than 66% of the workday) and up to 40 pounds occasionally (up to 33% of the workday);
- push or pull using forces up to 25 pounds occasionally (up to 33% of the workday);
- repetitively use hands for simple grasping, pushing, or pulling;
- bend, squat, kneel, reach overhead, lift overhead, push, pull, or climb stairs or step stools frequently (34 – 66% of the work day);
- lift up to 20 pounds in a range of motions from floor to overhead;
- work in a variety of environmental conditions;
- possess full range of body motions and physical agility.
