Lockheed Martin Endowed Director of the Advanced Manufacturing Sciences Institute
Department
College of Aerospace, Computing, Engineering, and Design
Summary
MSU Denver seeks a visionary, manufacturing industry experienced Director of the Advanced Manufacturing Sciences Institute (AMSI) to lead a dual mandate: (1) operate an Industry 4.0 Center of Excellence (COE) that serves Colorado manufacturers through demos, training, microcredentials, and sponsor partnerships; and (2) stand up and steward a Masters of Science in Innovation (Industry 4.0/5.0) graduate program, emphasizing AI-driven, model-based manufacturing with a strong human-centered (Industry 5.0) and space/hi-rel quality focus. The Director is the Institute's chief integrator—linking industry, faculty, labs, and students—and is accountable for growth, quality, compliance, and impact.
Reports to: Dean, College of Aerospace, Computing, Engineering & Design (CACED)
Type: 12-month administrative staff (endowed directorship) with potential teaching load by mutual agreement
Key Responsibilities
- Institute Leadership & Strategy
Set and execute the Advanced Manufacturing program's mission, vision, and annual plan; drive the program's strategy by advancing industry relevant technologies, practices, and partnerships that prepare students for immediate workforce impact and address critical manufacturing workforce gaps, while ensuring alignment with college and university strategy, budgets, and policies.
Maintain a high-functioning Advisory Board with an outcomes/KPI dashboard (sponsors, student credit hours, enrollments—including 4+1, badge revenue, placements). - Industry 4.0 Center of Excellence (COE)
Lead and scale the fee-for-service + partnerships engine: demonstrations, corporate training (standard/custom), microcredentials/certificates, applied R&D, capstone sponsorships, and selective lab/equipment access.
Leverage Colorado Advanced Manufacturing Association (CAMA) networks and state/federal awards (OEDIT, EDA) to convene industry partners, launch high-impact programming, and generate applied industry projects.
Standardize scoping, IP, safety, and KPI templates for company projects; ensure prudent financial management and risk controls. - Graduate Program: MS in Innovation (Industry 4.0/5.0)
Utilize industry-driven principles aligned with college program requirements to lead the launch and continuous improvement of the MS in Innovation, featuring an AMSI core in AI for Production, Digital Thread/Model-Based Engineering, Metrology & Automation, and Reliability/Cleanliness for Space, with both Plan A (Thesis) and Plan B (Industry Studio) pathways.
Build the Center of Excellence (COE) MS pipeline: make COE badges prereqs that stack into the MS; ensure a reliable sponsor flow for Industry Studios each term.
Coordinate cross-college delivery (Aerospace/Design/Engineering/Computer Science/Aviation), 4+1 pathways, assessment artifacts (FAI/NCR, SPC dashboards), and accreditation-ready documentation. - Academic & Student Success (selective teaching load)
Partner with academic departments to align curricula with current and emerging industry needs; strategically schedule AMSI-tagged laboratories; and expand internships, apprenticeships, and graduate placement with manufacturing employers.
When teaching, model industry best practices in human-in-the-loop and ethical AI, along with rigorous model-based work instructions and documentation (e.g., MBWI, digital travelers, scan-to-model overlays). - Laboratory & Compliance Stewardship
Oversee AMSI labs/testbeds (additive/hybrid CAM, metrology/vision, teleops cobot, VR/AR, vacuum/outgassing) for safe, scheduled, cross-program use and cross-program access while maximizing opportunities for industry collaboration and applied research.
Enforce OT/robotics safety, lockout/tagout (LOTO), segmented networks, and (as applicable) export control/ITAR segregation and documentation supporting industry partnerships through rigorous documentation and adherence to regulatory standards. - Advancement, Grants, and External Relations
Partner with Advancement on gifts/sponsorships; write/manage grants; grow fee-for-service revenue; cultivate tenants/partners in the AES building. - Administration & Reporting
Prepare annual reports, budget plans, and periodic reviews; supervise and evaluate AMSI staff; manage MOUs with academic units and external partners.
Required Qualifications

- Proven industry experience leading complex manufacturing/technology initiatives.
- Demonstrated success building partnerships with industry, public agencies, and community stakeholders; experience supervising staff and managing budgets.
- Evidence of excellence in one or more AMSI pillars: Industry 4.0 services, AI for production/analytics, digital thread/MBE, metrology/automation, space/hi-rel quality, or workforce programs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree (MS/MBA/PhD) in a relevant field; experience in higher education (teaching/advising) with diverse, urban student populations.
- Track record in grant-writing/fundraising, fee-for-service program design, and badge/microcredential ecosystems that articulate into degrees.
- Experience implementing robotics/automation safety, OT/ICS security, and/or export-control practices in academic or industrial settings.
Success Metrics
- COE activity ramp (demos/training delivered, sponsor count, badge uptake) and positive contribution margin against plan.
- MS launch milestones met (curriculum approvals, 4+1 policy, first cohort size/quality) and Industry Studios delivered with KPI dossiers.
- Lab utilization and safety compliance; advisory board engagement; shared KPI dashboard published each term.
