LEO Lecturer I for Fall Term 2026

The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, and the Department of Germanic Languages & Literatures (GLL) at the University of Michigan invite applications for a Lecturer I position at 66.67% effort for the Fall Term 2026. This appointment is scheduled to begin on 08/31/2026 and end on 12/31/2026. This is a non-tenure track position for Fall term, hired on a term-to-term basis, contingent upon performance, programmatic need, availability of work, and funding. The position has the possibility of continuing and increasing up to a 100% appointment depending on the qualifications, experience, performance of the chosen candidate and funding availability.

The University of Michigan Scandinavian program is an undergraduate program housed within GLL. It offers a vibrant space for engaging with the breadth and depth of Scandinavian cultures, politics, and histories. Students can choose to pursue the Minor in Scandinavian Studies which includes three years of Swedish language study, and enroll in three to four courses in English on the history and modern culture of the Scandinavian nations. The program is committed to providing classroom teaching of exceptional quality. All fourth semester students are invited to go on a study abroad trip to Sweden during Spring break. We seek candidates who will contribute to our language sequence and enliven our curriculum with one or more of the following offerings in English: Viking history and Mythology, sustainability, music, arts and literature, children's literature, business, or design and creativity.

Initial duties of this position will include teaching first year Swedish language, and one course in English for undergraduate students. This position involves in-person teaching, developing course materials, evaluating and grading students, holding regularly scheduled office hours, and participating in program events and activities. A typical full-time (66.67% effort) load for a Lecturer I in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts is two courses per semester.

Required Qualifications:

  • MA in Scandinavian Studies, Second Language Acquisition, or related field
  • Native/near native fluency in Swedish
  • Knowledge of historical and contemporary Scandinavian culture
  • Relevant work experience, including teaching, tutoring, and event organizing
  • Ability to work with a diverse student body
  • Experience mentoring and advising students

The selection criteria used for this search is based on how the applicant's education and experience meets the required minimum qualifications for the position. Excellence in teaching and instruction will be the principal criteria used to select the successful candidate.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Scandinavian Studies, Second Language Acquisition, or related field
  • Evidence of use of current technology and innovative methodologies in foreign language instruction
  • Experience in and knowledge of Swedish culture and business
  • Secondary specialization in another Scandinavian language and/or culture
