Essential Job Duties:
The Locksmith I plays an important role in maintaining the safety and security of campus facilities by supporting the installation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical locking systems and door hardware. This entry-level position provides an excellent opportunity for someone interested in developing specialized skills in locksmithing while working alongside experienced professionals in a collaborative facilities environment.

In this role, you will assist senior locksmiths with a variety of assignments, including lock repairs, installations, master keying systems, and preventative maintenance of security hardware across campus buildings. You will gain hands-on experience with key duplication, interchangeable cores, mortise locks, exit devices, door closers, and other mechanical security components while learning to use industry tools such as key machines, code machines, and keypunches.

The role also supports emergency response operations and plays a part in maintaining the integrity of the university's security hierarchy.

Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Install, repair, and maintain mechanical security hardware, including door locks, desk and file cabinet locks, door closers, mortise locks, exit devices, and other door hardware.
  • Cut keys by duplication and code while assisting with key blank identification and core keying.
  • Change lock combinations and service small-format interchangeable cores.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on locking systems to ensure long-term reliability and proper function.
  • Assist senior locksmiths with lock installations, repairs, and master key system work across campus facilities.
  • Learn and operate locksmithing equipment, including key machines, code machines, and keypunches.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical locking hardware issues and assist in diagnosing system failures.
  • Conduct initial situational assessments to identify the cause of malfunctioning locks or door hardware.
  • Track work orders, document service requests, and provide status updates using the AiM work order system.
  • Coordinate with faculty, staff, vendors, and shop personnel to complete assigned work orders and projects.
  • Assist with ordering materials and coordinating supplies needed for installations and repairs.
  • Complete assigned work within established timelines to support project schedules and budget expectations.
  • Maintain the locksmith shop by assisting with organization, cleaning, and proper tool care.
  • Support emergency response efforts and perform critical role duties when needed to maintain facility security.
  • Verify work accuracy and ensure installations meet safety standards, building codes, and university requirements.
  • Participate in ongoing training and demonstrate a willingness to learn emerging security technologies.
  • Assist with project closeouts and coordinate follow-up communication with customers after work completion.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the general public, and follow verbal and written instructions related to work assignments and operational needs.
  • Perform lifting duties up to 30 pounds frequently and 60 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodations.

Other Work/Responsibilities:

  • On-call rotation may be required
  • This position has been designated as mandatory personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule. This position may assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor.
  • Will be expected to complete continuing education and license renewal requirements.
  • Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities.

Minimum Experience/Education:
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Optional Guidelines: Experience in the Trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must communicate professionally with staff and the public while accurately following all verbal and written work instructions.
  • Must be able to lift 30 pounds frequently, with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Must be able to support critical roles during adverse weather conditions and emergencies as they arise.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic knowledge of tools and a mechanical background.
  • Some experience with door hardware and installation is preferred but not required for this position.
  • Ability to learn and safely operate locksmith tools and equipment, including key machines, code machines, keypunches, and other specialized trade tools.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assist in identifying mechanical failures and determining appropriate repair or replacement solutions.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and track work assignments, including documenting service requests and updates through a computerized maintenance management system (such as AiM or similar work order systems).

Required license or certification:

  • Valid DL required.
  • A valid North Carolina driver's license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
  • This position will require special apprentice licenses within six months of hire and/or certification(s). Apply for a full Locksmith License after two years of hire.
