Job Description
Facilities Maintenance Operations (FMO) offers building & landscape maintenance, and custodial services to Harvard faculties and departments on a fee-for-service basis. All services are provided in strict accordance with customer-determined standards. As such, FMO operates as an in-house alternative to contractor services and therefore must manage itself under the same principles that guide any successful maintenance service business.
The Millwright is responsible for installing, assembling, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing industrial machinery and mechanical equipment. This role ensures equipment operates efficiently, safely, and in compliance with company and regulatory standards.
Job-Specific Responsibilities:
Key Responsibilities:
- Install, assemble, and align industrial machinery and mechanical equipment.
- Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, and technical manuals.
- Inspect and test machinery to diagnose malfunctions.
- Dismantle and move machinery as required for repairs or relocation.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance on equipment.
- Replace defective components such as bearings, gears, shafts, and motors.
- Use hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and precision measuring instruments.
- Align equipment using laser alignment and other precision techniques.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies.
- Maintain maintenance records and documentation.
- Collaborate with electricians, engineers, and other maintenance personnel.
Other Responsibilities:
- Fabricates parts such as shafts, bearings, supports, etc.
- Modifies and rebuilds equipment to achieve satisfactory operation.
- Erects and aligns equipment such as fans, pumps, conveyors, etc.
- Fabricates specialty items for other trades.
- Inspects and repairs condensate meters, prepares and updates prints and records as necessary.
- Incumbent is required to wear safety equipment and clothing when appropriate and/or required.
- Required to wear a clean, neat uniform and maintain a professional image at all times.
Working Conditions:
- Emergency Status Designation: Critical Operations Personnel (required to provide on-site support during emergency situations as determined by management).
Physical Requirements:
- Required to bend, reach, and hold awkward positions for prolonged periods.
- The incumbent needs the ability to lift up to 50 lb. and to lift and transport various types of equipment and tools with others in excess of 300 lb.
- Must be able to push and pull heavy loads as listed above.
- Regularly works from ladders, platforms, high places, and cramped spaces.
- Considerable climbing, walking, and stooping.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of a Millwright apprenticeship or technical training program.
- Certification as a Journeyman Millwright (where required).
Additional Qualifications and Skills:
- Knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, conveyors, pumps, and gearboxes.
- Welding and fabrication experience.
- Experience with industrial automation systems.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to read technical drawings and schematics.
- Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces.
- Physical strength and stamina to lift heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of safety standards such as OSHA regulations.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills.
- Ability to work shifts, overtime, and on-call as needed.
- Must supply a complete set of hand tools.
Certificates and Licenses:
- Certification as a Journeyman Millwright (where required).

Location: Harvard Medical School (HMS), Boston, MA – Longwood Medical Area
Standard Hours/Schedule:
- 40 hours per week
- Sunday: Off
- Monday: 6:00 am - 2:30 pm
- Tuesday: 6:00 am - 2:30 pm
- Wednesday: 6:00 am - 2:30 pm
- Thursday: 6:00 am - 2:30 pm
- Friday: 6:00 am - 2:30 pm
- Saturday: Off
Compensation Range/Rate (including Shift Differential if applicable): $50.82/hour
