Position description

NEUROCRITICAL CARE FELLOW

The Department of Neurology at the UC Irvine School of Medicine offers a two-year neurocritical care fellowship accredited by the United Council for Neurological Subspecialties. The training is based at UC Irvine Medical Center, Orange County's only Level I trauma center and certified comprehensive stroke center.

The medical center's UC Irvine Health Douglas Hospital has advanced neuroimaging capabilities, including a 3-tesla MRI and a 64-slice CT scanner. Video EEG capabilities with off-site access allow for 24-hour monitoring of epilepsy patients. There are 12 dedicated neurointensive care unit beds. Our team includes neurocritical care fellowship-trained physicians from the Department of Neurology.

Please visit http://www.neurology.uci.edu/fellowships.asp for additional details.

The 24-month curriculum includes rotations in other intensive care units, anesthesiology department, epilepsy/EEG division, and interventional pulmonology. Elective rotations are negotiable. The fellow is expected to assume increasing responsibilities, lead rounds, teach residents and medical students, and lead the journal club.

Fellows are exposed to various cases and must become proficient in ventilator management, ventriculostomy management, and reading continuous EEG recordings. They must master procedural skills including central venous line placement, arterial line placement, multi-modality monitoring, lumbar puncture, and endotracheal intubation.

The program provides extensive training in patient safety, quality improvement, quality monitoring, and reporting. Upon completion, fellows will manage a wide range of neurological, neurosurgical, and medical critical care conditions.

Requirements: Applicants must be graduates of an ACGME-accredited residency in neurology, neurological surgery, internal medicine, anesthesiology, surgery, or emergency medicine, with previous scholarly activity. Completion of an ACGME-accredited residency program, DEA license, and California medical license prior to start. Candidates must be board-certified or eligible.
