Overview

The hourly rate for this position is $19.28 per hour for Undergraduate III (Senior) and is non-negotiable.

Under direction, incumbents must have course work in the discipline requested on the task order Statement of Work.

This Statement of Work is to provide technical and analytical support in the field of Mechanical Engineering, with potential application to related engineering disciplines. It covers the need for a student services contractor to develop hardware solutions for the test and evaluation of emerging RF systems. Work would include mechanical design and fabrication support, and mechanical system integration. Basic knowledge of mechanical system design and materials science is essential. The student contractor should be familiar with mechanical design fundamentals and materials science. In addition, the student will support mechanical assembly and testing operations.

Current Model Range projects develop shipboard system enhancements and support various agencies and programs Navy-wide. These efforts require mechanical design, fabrication, and integration. THE WORK WILL BE PERFORMED IN PERSON AT NIWC PACIFIC, POINT LOMA COMPLEX, SAN DIEGO, CA.

Responsibilities

The student contractor shall provide analytical and technical support in the following areas as specified under individual task orders, to the work sponsor.

Mechanical Engineering Support:

  • Design and fabrication of mechanical components and assemblies for RF systems.
  • Support mechanical integration of RF hardware systems and test fixtures.
  • CAD modeling using SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar platforms.
  • Support prototype development and testing of mechanical systems.
  • Materials selection and mechanical analysis.

Security:

  • Contractor will attend meetings and access information up to the Secret level under this contract. Contractors will be required to obtain a SECRET clearance. Cleared for CUI is acceptable for the first few months.
  • Some contractor personnel will perform non-technical, administrative duties at the Unclassified and/or Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) level at the contractor facility. These duties do not involve a CAC for logical access to government information systems nor physical access to the base. Therefore, a Fitness Determination by NIWC PAC Personnel Security is not required.

Qualifications

Undergraduate Student 3: Must have course work in the discipline requested on the task order Statement of Work. The student must be at the Senior level and have experience in 100% of the task requirements and be able to accomplish 90% of the work independently.

Minimum Qualifications Requirements:

  • Undergraduate 3: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related engineering major preferred; relevant majors such as Materials Science, Systems Engineering, or Applied Physics may be suitable given relevant coursework and/or work experience.
  • Differential equations
  • Calculus 1, 2 & 3
  • Physics
  • Statics and Dynamics
  • Engineering Design and CAD
  • Materials Science fundamentals

DESIRED EXPERIENCE and QUALIFICATIONS:

  • CAD software proficiency (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Fusion 360, etc.)
  • Mechanical fabrication and assembly (3D printing, machining, etc.)
  • Systems Engineering
  • Ability to read and implement technical documents, engineering drawings, or test standards.
  • Flexible with learning new tools and technologies based on project needs.
  • Independent/self-starter who can operate under minimal oversight
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team

ADDITIONAL APPLICANT INFORMATION:

  • This position will require the employee to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance
  • Due to the regulations established by the Department of Defense, only US Citizens may qualify
  • This is a student position and is limited to working 20 hours per week
  • The student will work at NIWC Pacific, Point Loma Complex, San Diego, CA.
  • This position will remain open until filled
  • Candidate must reside in California and live within a commutable distance from SDSU at time of hire.
  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on background check results (including a criminal record check).
