Description:
The Department of Finance at the Haslam College of Business, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, invites applications and nominations for three full-time, non-tenure-track faculty positions. These positions will be classified under the Lecturer, Teaching Professor, or Professor of Practice tracks, with the specific title and rank dependent on qualifications. Interviews will be conducted via videoconference starting in October 2025 and we will invite the finalists for each position to campus.
Position Details
The Department of Finance anticipates hiring three non-tenure-track faculty members to support teaching needs across the finance curriculum, which includes courses in corporate finance, investments, FinTech, real estate, and personal financial planning. While candidates will not be expected to teach in all areas of the curriculum, the department has a particular interest in hiring at least one individual who can contribute to course offerings in real estate and/or personal financial planning.
The specific course assignments, as well as the separate determinations of track (Lecturer, Teaching Professor, Professor of Practice) and rank of all hires, will be based on departmental needs and candidate strengths.
Successful candidates are expected to engage with students beyond the classroom to help them enhance their skills and career readiness. Faculty must be able to collaborate effectively within the Department, College, and University.

Department Overview
The Department of Finance is one of seven academic departments within the Haslam College of Business. It offers programs at the undergraduate, MBA, Executive MBA, and doctoral levels, and houses the Masters Investment Learning Center. Finance is a popular major and minor at UTK. The department is committed to excellence in teaching, research, and service, and prides itself on a collegial and collaborative environment among faculty and students.

Qualifications:
Track and Rank Qualifications:
Consistent with the University of Tennessee, Knoxville Faculty Handbook and college/department bylaws, non-tenure-track (NTT) titles and ranks are determined based on credentials and a documented record of effectiveness in assigned responsibilities (primarily teaching).
Lecturer Series (Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Distinguished Lecturer)
- Lecturer – Holds (or will hold at the time of appointment) a Master’s degree or higher in Finance or a related field and shows promise for excellence in assigned responsibilities.
- Senior Lecturer – As above, with a demonstrated record of excellence in assigned responsibilities.
- Distinguished Lecturer – As above, with a sustained, consistent record of excellence in assigned responsibilities.
Teaching Professor Series (Assistant, Associate, Teaching Professor)
- Teaching Assistant Professor – Holds a Ph.D. (or will hold at the time of appointment) in Finance or a related field with promise for excellence in teaching and related responsibilities, evidenced by early effectiveness and contributions.
- Teaching Associate Professor – Terminal degree with a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching and related responsibilities.
- Teaching Professor (Full) – Terminal degree with a sustained, consistent record of excellence and evidence of instructional leadership (e.g., curriculum development, mentoring, pedagogical innovation) commensurate with senior rank.
Professor of Practice Series (Assistant, Associate, Professor of Practice)
- Assistant Professor of Practice – Holds a Ph.D. (or will hold at the time of appointment) in Finance or a related field and/or appropriate professional licensure/certification and significant professional experience; shows promise for excellence in assigned responsibilities.
- Associate Professor of Practice – As above, with a demonstrated record of excellence in assigned responsibilities.
- Professor of Practice – As above, with a sustained, consistent record of excellence in assigned responsibilities; often includes evidence of professional or instructional leadership.
Notes on Evidence and Evaluation: Appointment rank and later promotion is determined based on evidence of achievement in assigned duties, which may include course evaluations, peer reviews, curricular or program leadership, mentoring, pedagogical innovation, student success contributions, and service aligned with instructional roles. Expectations are calibrated to workload and unit bylaws.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated effectiveness in undergraduate-level teaching.
- A strong commitment to student success.
- Industry experience and/or relevant certifications (e.g., CFP, CFA, real estate licensure) are desirable but not required.
- A desire to lead coordination of CFP (Certified Financial Planner) coursework.
- The ability and desire to teach and/or develop programming in our graduate and executive education (GEE) programs, such as the Masters in Financial Economics, MBA, Executive MBA, Physicians Executive MBA, or Aerospace and Defense MBA.
