Occupational Therapist II (Waltham)

Position Summary / Department Summary

We are seeking a passionate, flexible, and experienced Occupational Therapist (OT) with expertise in Assistive Technology (AT) and Alternative Access for individuals with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). This role focuses on supporting individuals across the progression of ALS in maintaining access to assistive technology and communication through augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems using a wide range of access strategies and technologies. This is a dynamic opportunity to work with a team committed to preserving autonomy and quality of life for individuals with complex communication and physical access needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive evaluations to determine the most appropriate AAC and AT solutions tailored to each stage of ALS progression.
  • Implement and support alternative access strategies, including: Voice control (e.g., Siri, Google Assistant, Alexa, Dragon, etc.), Built-in accessibility features (e.g., Voice Control, Eye Tracking, Dwell Click, Keyboard Access, Switch Control) across iOS, Android, Windows, and macOS.
  • Assess and implement specialized access methods ranging from low to high tech including use of typing aids, sticky keys, switch activation, custom interface adaptations, head mouse, and eye tracking.
  • Assess mounting solutions with strong emphasis on best current adaptation and preparation for future needs.
  • Collaborate with patients, SLPs, caregivers, and interdisciplinary providers.
  • Train patients and care teams in using selected AAC systems and access tools effectively.
  • Monitor changes in physical ability and adapt access methods accordingly.
  • Provide documentation for funding, insurance, and care continuity.
  • Stay current with advances in AAC, AT, and platform-specific accessibility tools.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Licensed Occupational Therapist (OTR/L)

Experience

Minimum five (5) years of experience in AAC and Assistive Technology service provision. Demonstrated expertise in alternative access technologies and accessibility across devices and platforms. Experience working with ALS and/or other neurodegenerative conditions. Strong communication, problem-solving, and interdisciplinary collaboration skills.

Licensure / Certifications

OTR/L licensure required. ATP Certification (Assistive Technology Professional) preferred or willingness to pursue.

Preferred Skills & Knowledge

Knowledge of major AAC systems (e.g., Smartbox, Tobii Dynavox, PRC-Saltillo, iPad-based AAC apps). Experience configuring and supporting switch access, eye tracking, and custom mounts/adaptations. Familiarity with funding pathways, including Medicare/Medicaid documentation requirements. Ability to train and support patients both in-person and remotely, where license/hospital regulations allow.
