The Department of Pathology at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University is seeking a faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor. The primary focus of this role is to provide high-level diagnostic expertise and oversee laboratory operations for Wellstar MCG Health, including adult, pediatric, and cancer services. Responsibilities include providing expert consultation and diagnostic reporting within a selected subspecialty such as Transfusion Medicine, Hematopathology, or Microbiology; overseeing clinical laboratory operations and ensuring compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards, including CAP, CLIA, and The Joint Commission; serving as a key liaison between the laboratory and clinical teams by advising on test selection, result interpretation, and patient management initiatives such as patient blood management or antimicrobial stewardship; and supporting the integration of emerging technologies into clinical laboratory workflows. This position does not meet the requirements to be on a tenure track.

Responsibilities

Clinical - 95%
High-level diagnostic expertise and overseeing laboratory operations for Wellstar MCG Health (encompassing adult, pediatric, and cancer centers)

Diagnostic Interpretation: Providing expert consultation and reporting in a chosen subspecialty, such as Transfusion Medicine, Hematopathology, or Microbiology

Medical Directorship: Managing clinical laboratory operations, which includes ensuring compliance with regulatory bodies like CAP, CLIA, and the Joint Commission

Consultation

Acting as a vital bridge between the laboratory and clinical teams

Advising on test selection

Result interpretation

Patient management (e.g., patient blood management or antimicrobial stewardship)

Integrating emerging technologies into the clinical workflow

Academic Research - 5%
Direct teaching and mentoring of medical students, pathology residents, and fellows

Curriculum Development: Contributing to the educational mission through lectures, grand rounds, and bedside teaching

Helping trainees navigate clinical pathology principles and laboratory management

Required Qualifications

MD, DO or equivalent with CP or AP/CP training and American Board of Pathology board certification or board eligible. Subspecialty interest or fellowship training and/or experience. GA state licensure. Credentialed to practice at Wellstar MCG Health Medical center.

Assistant Professor- Early level career as a faculty member with appropriate post graduate training.

Associate Professor- Mid level career faculty member with at least five years at rank of Assistant Professor or comparable training, background, and experience.

Professor- Senior level career faculty member with at least five years at the rank of Associate Professor or comparable training, background, and experience.

Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be:

  • Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)'s requirements for institutional accreditation;
  • Evidence of ability as a teacher;
  • Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned;
  • Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and,
  • Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.

Shift/Salary/Benefits

This position is fiscal year based and works year-round.

The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0 and considered full-time.

Assistant Professor- Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.

Associate Professor- Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.

Professor- Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.
