Job Details

Position Summary

The University of Georgia School of Medicine is seeking two experienced, innovative faculty members at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor who will serve as medical educators to teach primarily in our pre-clerkship curriculum (Years 1 and 2). This may include, but is not limited to, serving as a facilitator in small group learning and as a large group instructor. We are seeking to address current curricular needs in neuroscience, cell biology/histology, physiology and pathology, so individuals with training and teaching experience in one or more of these areas are especially encouraged to apply. Medical Educators are expected to participate in developing assessment questions for weekly quizzes and module examinations, participate in exam adjudication sessions when appropriate, and participate in faculty development sessions. Medical Educators also participate in collaborative educational research or other scholarly endeavors, and will serve on department, school and/or university committees as needed. UGA School of Medicine basic science and clinical science faculty work closely together within our unique curriculum, including in pairs to facilitate case-based small group student learning on a weekly basis.

The successful candidate will have a primary appointment at the University of Georgia School of Medicine, in either the Department of Interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences or the Department of Clinical Sciences, depending on whether he/she has basic sciences training or clinical training. The candidate will also have an adjunct faculty appointment in the appropriate department at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University. Our campus will continue to educate medical students from the Medical College of Georgia through approximately 2030, as the UGA School of Medicine becomes fully established.

The position is a non-tenure track appointment, and rank will be awarded commensurate with experience. Department of Interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences promotion guidelines can be found here: https://provost.uga.edu/wp-content/uploads/capu-criteria-interdisciplinary-biomedical-sciences.pdf. Working Title: Open Rank Faculty & Medical Educator

Department: SOM-Interdisc Biomed Sciences

About the University of Georgia: Chartered by the state of Georgia in 1785, the University of Georgia is the birthplace of public higher education in America and is the state’s flagship university https://www.uga.edu/. The proof is in our more than 240 years of academic and professional achievements and our continual commitment to higher education. UGA is currently ranked among the top 20 public universities in U.S. News & World Report. The University’s main campus is located in Athens, approximately 65 miles northeast of Atlanta, with extended campuses in Atlanta, Griffin, Gwinnett, and Tifton. UGA employs approximately 3,100 faculty and more than 7,700 full-time staff. The University’s enrollment exceeds 41,000 students including over 31,000 undergraduates and over 10,000 graduate and professional students. Academic programs reside in 19 schools and colleges, including our newly established School of Medicine.

About the College/Unit/Department: The University of Georgia is establishing a new independent School of Medicine in Athens, building on the success of the Augusta University / University of Georgia Medical Partnership, which has been educating physicians in Athens since 2010. The establishment of a new public medical school at UGA comes as the state faces a significant shortage of medical professionals. The population of Georgia, the nation’s eighth largest state, has surged to approximately 11 million residents, straining existing medical infrastructure and resulting in longer wait times for appointments and reduced access to care. Georgia currently ranks 40th in the nation for the number of active patient care physicians per capita and 41st for the number of public medical students per capita.

As a top 20 public university with a thriving research enterprise and vast public service network, the University of Georgia is well positioned to produce more highly trained physicians, alleviate physician shortages, and improve the state’s ability to provide quality health care for its citizens.

The School of Medicine is located on UGA’s Health Sciences Campus in Athens, home to UGA’s College of Public Health and the current AU/ UGA Medical Partnership. In its inaugural year, the UGA SOM plans to enroll 60 students per class, but a new $100 million medical school building will enable the UGA School of Medicine to grow to 120 students per class in the future.

The University of Georgia School of Medicine is seeking accreditation and has been formally recognized with “candidate status” by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), beginning a multi-year accreditation process.
