The University of Washington (UW) School of Medicine (SoM), Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking one full-time faculty member (open rank) to provide clinical services in support of its expanding clinical and academic programs, including a new multidisciplinary Intensive Care Unit at UW Medicine in Seattle, Washington. Full-time faculty may be recruited at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor without tenure due to funding (WOT) commensurate with experience.

HMC is the premier Level I trauma and burn center and a quaternary, safety-net, teaching hospital within the UW Medicine system. HMC serves as the regional resource for trauma, burn care, neuroscience, and complex critical care, fostering a mission to provide expert care to underserved populations. The critical care services at HMC encompass cutting-edge management of complex cases, including trauma, stroke, and sepsis. UWMC-Montlake (UWMC-ML) is a renowned quaternary teaching hospital within the UW Medicine system. UWMC-ML is nationally recognized for excellence in transplant medicine, cardiology, oncology, surgical care, and complex critical care, while advancing patient safety, clinical outcomes, and innovative research. UWMC-ML is home to high-acuity Intensive Care Units (ICUs), including the Cardiothoracic ICU (CT ICU), which is an Extracorporeal Life Support Organization Platinum Center of Excellence. Other specialized units include the Medical ICU, Surgical ICU, and Oncology-Bone Marrow Transplant ICU, which provide expert care for critically ill patients with cardiopulmonary, medical, surgical, and oncological conditions. The HMC and UWML-ML EDs serve approximately 100,000 patients annually, caring for a wide range of acute and emergent medical conditions. The combined UW Medicine ECMO program has over 100 runs per year, with an active primary and secondary retrieval program that supports a five-state region. Faculty work in a highly collaborative environment, integrating clinical care with teaching and research within an academic framework. All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service.

This faculty member will work at Harborview Medical Center (HMC) and/or University of Washington Medical Center-Montlake (UWMC-ML) Intensive Care Units. Primary responsibilities will include providing specialized care for critically ill patients in the intensive care unit while conducting teaching and contributing to the advancement of critical care medicine.

The UW SoM offers wide ranging and unique opportunities for faculty development and academic growth including established collaborations across emergency medicine, critical care, emergency medical services, and many other disciplines and entities. Academic foci related to critical care include cardiac arrest, sepsis, ARDS, trauma and hemorrhagic shock, ECMO, and others. There is also a range of career development opportunities through the UW Department of Biomedical Education and Medical Education (BIME), the Center for Leadership in Medical Education (CLIME), and the WWAMI Institute for Simulation in Healthcare (WISH).

The UW SoM is a regional resource for WA, WY, AK, MT, and ID, the WWAMI states, and is recognized for its excellence in clinical training, for its world-class research initiatives, and for its commitment to community service.

Assistant Professors without tenure due to funding (WOT) are eligible for multi-year appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1 – June 30). Associate Professors WOT and Professors WOT hold indefinite appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1 – June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off. The anticipated start date is September 1, 2026.

The base salary for this position will be $18,750 - $25,833 per month ($225,000 - $309,996 per annum) commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a US Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Please note that only compensation provided by the University is included in University benefit determination and calculations. Other compensation associated with this position may include a guaranteed incentive of $3,386 - $5,938 per month ($40,632 - $71,256 per annum) through UW Physicians practice plan and may also include a Relocation Incentive.

Qualifications

  • Candidate must have a M.D. or D.O. (or foreign equivalent.)
  • Successful applicants must be board certified and/or board eligible in Emergency Medicine and Critical Care Medicine.
  • Candidate should have expertise in caring for critically ill patients across a range of conditions—including medical, neurological, and trauma/surgical—and possess at least one year of experience in cardiovascular critical care, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), echocardiography, and mechanical circulatory support.
  • Candidate must possess or be eligible for full medical licensure in Washington State.
  • In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-US) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the US Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
