Position Overview

Merrimack College invites applications for a 9-month non-tenure track, full-time, open rank professor-of-practice position beginning Fall 2026.

Merrimack College invites applications from individuals interested in helping us launch our new BA in Architectural Studies and BS in Architecture programs in Fall of 2026. Applicants must demonstrate excellence in architecture studio instruction and student mentoring, as well as expertise in wood fabrication and project management.

This new position will manage the fabrication shop for the first year for our new Department of Creative Arts, Design, & Architecture (CADA). In addition, they will use the fabrication facilities as a resource to coordinate and teach first-year Foundations Studios.

Applicant letters should explain the ways the candidate envisions shop fabrication being directly incorporated into first-year studio teaching. Applicants should also describe relevant experience with budget and scheduling, and with student training and supervision.

The Foundations & Fabrication Specialist must be able to manage the daily operations, material delivery and storage, safety, budget, and schedule of the shop facilities. In addition, they will manage student workers and assist with building operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and teach first-year architecture foundations studios
  • Archive course materials and student work for foundation studios
  • Oversee the safe student use of fabrication facilities and conduct regular safety trainings
  • Manage shop budget and scheduling
  • Maintain shop equipment and regulate health and safety conditions
  • Supervise student workers
  • Support shop and building logistics

Qualifications

  • Professional Master’s degree in architecture
  • 2-years minimum studio teaching experience
  • Experience managing student workers and mentoring students
  • Experience managing project budget and scheduling
  • Demonstrated woodworking and fabrication experience
  • Knowledge of (and ability to maintain) safe shop practices
  • Knowledge of EH&S, OSHA, and shop safety regulations

Application Materials Should Include

  • A cover letter which clearly describes relevant fabrication and studio teaching experience and proposes an approach to shop-fabrication-based foundation architecture studio instruction. The letter should also describe competencies with managing budget and scheduling, and with student training and supervision. Please also include any experience relevant to our Catholic Augustinian mission.
  • Complete and up-to-date curriculum vitae
  • A teaching statement, including a teaching philosophy and methods of supporting undergraduate students to learn new skills and to develop new ways of making and imagining. This should be accompanied by images of student work and a clear description of the applicant’s previous roles in developing curriculum and participating in instruction.
  • A service statement, that shares examples of working collegially as part of a teaching team, and that indicates experience supporting the operations of a school or program.
  • A portfolio of architectural or other design works (built and unbuilt) that demonstrates architectural design skills and fabrication abilities.
  • Names and full contact information for three professional references.

Work Location

This is an on-campus position as employees are essential to provide a fully on-campus, residential college experience for our students and the community.

Compensation

The expected 9-month base salary range (paid over 12 months) for the Lecturer is $70,000-85,000, Assistant Professor of Practice position is $74,000-$90,000; for the Associate Professor of Practice is $90,000-$110,000. The actual pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as, but not limited to, candidate qualifications and prior experience, scope of responsibilities, internal equity, and market considerations.
