Open Rank Professor of the Practice in International Studies

The Boston College International Studies (IS) Program invites applications for the position of Associate or full Professor of the Practice. We are seeking candidates with expertise in human rights, humanitarianism, religion, international security, migration, and/or climate change who have substantial professional experience in government, NGOs, intergovernmental organizations, think tanks, or international news organizations.

This is a full-time, non-tenure-track, renewable contract position. If hired into the Associate level, the position includes a pathway to promotion to the rank of Professor of the Practice (without tenure). The professor of the practice teaching load normally entails three courses per semester, but a one-course (per year) reduction will be offered in light of career mentoring responsibilities, making the teaching load five courses per year. These in-person undergraduate courses will be rooted in the IS Program, but some may be cross-listed in other related academic programs when appropriate. Additional expectations include academic advising of undergraduate IS majors and thesis writers; service on the IS Academic Advisory Board; and engaged mentoring of IS majors and minors who are considering careers related to international affairs.

The appointment will begin in July 2026, with teaching duties beginning mid-August 2026. Salary will range from $110,000 to $150,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Qualifications
Successful candidates will have substantial professional experience in government, NGOs, intergovernmental organizations, think tanks, or international news organizations. Graduate academic credentials are required (Ph.D. or J.D. is preferred, masters degree required at minimum); demonstrated success in undergraduate teaching is strongly preferred.

Application Instructions
Applicants must submit a letter of application; curriculum vitae; three letters of reference; and a list of possible future courses as well as courses previously taught, if available, by September 28, 2025. Applications should be submitted electronically via Interfolio (https://apply.interfolio.com/172560). After an initial review, selected candidates will be invited to submit further materials, including a writing sample and, as available, evidence of excellence in teaching. First-round interviews will be conducted via video-conference; finalists will interview on campus. For more information, contact Ms. Maria Ordoñez, administrative assistant for Interdisciplinary Programs, at ordonemb@bc.edu.
