Function of Position:
Reporting to the Director of Learning Support Systems, Paraprofessional Tutors are staff who work with students to help them to develop effective learning strategies and to become self-regulated learners. These tutors help students with discipline-specific content.
Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:
Primary Functions:
- Foster the development of independent, intentional learners
- Help students understand and use effective learning strategies
- Provide tutor assistance in Biology in one-on-one and group settings
- Develop and nurture rapport with students, peers, and faculty
- Attend training activities to comply with tutoring requirements and expectations before and/or during semesters
- Collaborate with the Director of Learning Support Systems on providing workshops to fill learning gaps of both tutors and students with discipline specific content. The Director of Learning Support Systems will collaborate with the Biology Department as needed.
- Adhere to tutoring center protocol and tutoring expectations as outlined in the Tutor Handbook
- Promote critical thinking and problem solving
- Help to identify and fill learning gaps with discipline specific content
- Visit classrooms, as needed, to introduce students to tutoring services
- Assisting with other learning assistance projects as assigned
- Adheres to the College Code of Conduct.
- Contributes to, supports, and maintains an equitable, inclusive, and collaborative College environment.
- Maintains technological competencies utilized by the College.
- Commits to the philosophy of a comprehensive community college.
- Commits to professional growth. which includes seeking ongoing training in diversity, equity and inclusion to better serve students.
Required Qualifications:
- Associates or working towards a Bachelor's Degree in Biology or Biology-related discipline
- Technology savvy
- Experience working with diverse college populations
- Two years of tutoring experience
- Teaching experience in Biology in grades 9-12 or at the community college level
- Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish, or other languages, proficiently
Pay Rate:
Paraprofessional
Associates Degree - $16.00/hr to $17/hr
Job Type: Part Time
Hours: 10-20 Hours per Week
