Description:

Reporting to Dr. Julie Case, Associate Professor and Director of the Case Speech Production Lab, the Part-Time Bilingual Speech-Language Pathologist will support a two-year research grant focused on childhood apraxia of speech in Spanish-English bilingual children ages 3–5. This individual will be responsible for scheduling participants, administering all assessment tasks via telepractice, and supervising student scoring of administered assessment protocols and ratings. The role requires learning and adhering to all aspects of the experimental protocol, including assessment procedures in both Spanish and English, recording processes, and the proper storage and management of materials and documentation in accordance with Institutional Review Board (IRB) guidelines. Assessments will be conducted with approximately 20 child participants over the course of the study, with up to eight hours allocated per participant. This is a part-time position limited to a maximum of 160 total hours over two years, with weekly hours not to exceed 20.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Completes human subjects training through the Hofstra University Institutional Review Board (IRB) to ensure all aspects of the experiment align with university policy, protect participant privacy, and ensure the secure storage of all data.
  • Demonstrates mastery of the experimental protocol, including all IRB-approved procedures related to assessment tasks, administrative duties, and student involvement.
  • Manages participant recruitment efforts, including posting IRB-approved flyers on social media platforms, email distribution lists, and foundations serving the CAS population
  • Coordinates participant scheduling to ensure completion of all experimental tasks within a two-week timeframe.
  • Operates and maintains telepractice platforms and recording equipment to ensure smooth session connectivity and accurate recording of experimental data.
  • Administers all assessment tasks via telepractice in both Spanish and English, including single-word articulation tests, dynamic assessments, expressive and receptive language testing, and syllable repetition tasks.
  • Records participant performance on all assessment tasks using approved protocols, including screen recording software and digital acoustic recording tools.
  • Scores and uploads all assessment protocols within one hour of each session to ensure timely data processing.
  • Manages video and digital session recordings and ensures secure upload and storage on a cloud-based server.
  • Supervises student scoring of assessment protocols and rating procedures to maintain accuracy and fidelity.
  • Participates in and contributes to research team meetings throughout the study, including meetings with the Principal Investigator (PI) when fidelity in experimental task administration requires review.
  • Follows up with participants at the conclusion of the study to address questions regarding participation and coordinate compensation distribution.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Spanish-English bilingual speaker with a high degree of fluency in both languages.
  • Licensed Speech-Language Pathologist holding a Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
  • Minimum of three (3) years of professional experience as a practicing speech-language pathologist.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting dynamic assessments of pediatric speech sound disorders with at least three (3) patients.
  • Prior experience administering assessment tasks via telepractice with at least three (3) patients.
  • Previous experience conducting bilingual speech-language assessments with at least three (3) patients.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the administration of the Dynamic Evaluation of Motor Speech Skill (DEMSS), in addition to other dynamic assessment tasks
  • Experience in the differential diagnosis of childhood apraxia of speech from dysarthria and other speech sound disorders
  • Completion of advanced clinical training in the assessment of pediatric motor speech disorders, including CAS (at least 2 workshops dedicated to this topic)
