Part-Time Faculty: ARI 244 Casting: Jewelry & Metalsmithing (Fall 2025)
The School of Art within the College of Visual and Performing Arts seeks a Part-Time Instructor to teach ARI 244 Casting: Jewelry and Metalsmithing, a three credit hour course, during the Fall semester, 2025. Basic casting methods used by the studio jeweler and metalsmith. Includes wax modeling and lost wax, cuttlefish bone, and other casting methods.
Qualifications: Jewelry and Metalsmithing (JAM) MFA and/or equivalent, 3 years teaching experience in JAM.
Job Specific Qualifications:
- Teach basic casting methods used by the studio jeweler and metalsmith. Includes wax modeling and lost wax, cuttlefish bone, and other casting methods.
- Competency and experience working in jewelry/metalsmithing classroom/studio.
- Understanding of and have the ability to teach basic non-ferrous metallurgy as it pertains to the metal construction process.
- Understanding of the history as it pertains to jewelry. Understanding of concepts in contemporary jewelry and metalsmithing.
- Knowledge and ability to teach safe practices.
Responsibilities:
- Teach studio class twice per week - 2.5 hrs. ea. - 2025 Fall.
- Work with varying skill set levels, hold occasional critiques, maintain a safe and productive workspace and environment, thorough knowledge of various casting apparatus.
- Prep for each class meeting, hold office hour(s), etc. Generous with attention and patience.
- In addition: Developing and/or updating a class syllabus. Preparation of lectures, projects or other student assignments. Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours. Presenting instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course. Meeting all designated class periods. If you are unable to meet your class due to illness or emergency, you should exercise your best effort to reschedule the class or to obtain a substitute. You must also notify the department chair of your absence and of your plan to cover the class. Submitting completed mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations. Grading student assignments and exams in timely manner. Providing departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations. Building a positive rapport with students and other faculty.
