Summary of Position

The mission of the Visual Arts Department is to inspire creative and thoughtful investigation of studio skills, cultivate original ideas, develop critical thinking and encourage a life-long appreciation of the arts. Our department is supportive of the diverse educational and professional needs of students with a wide range of goals.

The Jewelry & Metals Instructor position at RRCC is an exciting opportunity for a passionate and skilled metalsmith and educator to contribute to a vibrant arts program. This role involves developing and delivering engaging coursework in jewelry design and metalsmithing techniques, encompassing areas such as fabrication, casting, stone setting, and engraving. The successful candidate will provide hands-on guidance, fostering a safe and inspiring studio environment where students can cultivate their creativity and technical abilities. The instructor is expected to stay current with industry trends and techniques, integrating them into the curriculum to ensure students gain relevant skills for success in the field.

Part-time Instructors provide instructional duties for the College in their respective areas of expertise. They report to the department chair within the discipline and do not have any supervisory responsibilities. Responsibilities include instruction, student assessment, and other related instructional duties. Instructional delivery may include face-to-face, hybrid, and online. Classes may be held on days, evenings, and weekends. The pay for this position is $1,149.00 - $2,376.06 per credit hour, commensurate with education and experience. This is a part-time, FLSA exempt position and may work up to 28 hours per week, depending on budget and need. This position has been exempted from the State Classified System.

The instructor must be patient and respectful, while also providing their expectations for what is considered acceptable work. The instructor must display dedication to the class as well as the goals of the program. This posting will be used to fill multiple part-time Instructor vacancies. Finalists must be willing to make Colorado their primary workplace, including online courses.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in metalworking, precious metals, and soldering techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly and patiently explain complex technical processes, inspire artistic exploration, and provide constructive feedback to diverse student populations.
  • Ability to work from campus (primarily our Lakewood campus with occasional hours at the Arvada campus).
  • Demonstrated ability to work with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to teach students using traditional and alternative methods of instruction
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate technology into the classroom

Required Qualifications

  • A master's degree (MFA) from an accredited institution in Visual Art or a closely related field and 18 graduate hours in Jewelry & Metals (sculpture, or a related field).
  • Experience teaching at the college level.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience incorporating digital processes in Jewelry & Metals (Computer Aided Design, 3D Printing, etc.)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience using non-traditional learning environments.
  • GIA certification or similar.
  • Experience teaching at the college level.
  • Experience teaching online classes.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with diverse communities and supporting individuals from diverse populations, which may include but are not limited to, racial, ethnic, and gender backgrounds that are underrepresented.

Physical & Cognitive Demands

The following are some of the physical and cognitive demands commonly associated with this position.

  • Occasionally moves, positions, and transports files and office materials weighing up to 10 lbs.
  • This is largely a sedentary role. This position operates in an office environment and constantly uses a computer, and routinely uses standard office equipment including phones, copiers, etc.
  • The person in this position constantly communicates with internal and external constituents and students. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • Cognitive demands include comparing, copying, computing, compiling, analyzing, coordinating, synthesizing, negotiating, communicating, instructing, and interpersonal skills.
