Description:

Hours of Work: Fall Schedule consists of teaching every Tuesday and Thursday from 10:30AM-11:45AM. In the Spring, faculty instructors will only meet with the class once a week on Thursday from 10:30AM-11:45AM. In addition, the instructor will meet once a week with the BAIC during the whole year.

Essential Functions: Teach a fifteen week course to undergraduate students (Sophomores, Juniors or Seniors) who are interested in conducting a social justice research project. The course is designed as a two semester seminar that offers leadership, research, and public social policy training for students interested in working with communities of color.

Specific Duties include:

  • Teach a year long research course to a group of undergraduate students through class lectures and group discussions (topics include: defining a research question, research and methodologies, considerations a researcher must take when they are researching participants, informed consent, confidentiality, etc.)
  • Support students in developing and conducting their research projects in the Spring Semester
  • Assist students in managing student-faculty supervisor relationships in the Spring Semester
  • Prepare students to present their final research projects to university guests and potentially at a Conference if their proposals are accepted.
  • Communicate expectations and establish clear grading criteria through appropriate instructional means, to include but not limited to developing course syllabus, handouts, and materials supporting the instructional process
  • Provide office hours to meet with individual students to help them design their research projects
  • Work in collaboration with the BAIC coordinator in identifying and scheduling academic and community leaders as guest speakers for the fall semester
  • Attend weekly meetings with the BAIC coordinator and occasionally attend BAIC staff meetings to provide updates on the students' progress in the course
  • Communicate with the BAIC coordinator if changes are made to the syllabus
  • Collaborate with the BAIC coordinator to recruit students' faculty advisors for the Spring Semester
  • Partake in a end of year evaluation with a senior leadership member at the BAIC

Qualifications:

A Master's Degree or higher in Sociology, Education, History or related field required with Community Research Experience

Experience/ interest in working with and advising diverse undergraduate students

Knowledge/experience of research methods and the process of conducting scholarly research

Interest in community-based research

General knowledge/interest in increasing knowledge of AHANA communities and current issues affecting these populations

Interest in multicultural student affairs and ability to work with a diverse population of undergraduate and graduate students and administrators

Strong written and oral communication and organization skills

Ability to multi-task and adapt easily

Ability to meet deadlines and otherwise act responsibly
