Pay Range: $5,000 - $6,000 per course
Pay Determination: Salary offers at Syracuse University will be based on education, experience, and relevant skills, as well as the academic or professional discipline of the position in the context of the home department, school, or college. Salary offers may also be influenced by prior relevant work or industry experience, where applicable. Faculty pay ranges are for 8.5 months salary unless otherwise specified.

Job Description:
The Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University seeks a part time instructor to teach 1 open section of Sociology 300 - Sociology of Education Online Summer 2026 (3 credits).
Course Description:
This course provides an introduction to sociological perspectives on education. Students will be equipped with the tools to think sociologically about schools and education as social institutions. In this course, we will discuss various sociological theories of education, paying particular attention to the relationship between education and inequality in the United States from the K-12 level through higher education. Students will engage with both foundational readings in the sociology of education and apply what they have learned to understand contemporary issues and debates in the field.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of an MA in Sociology or a closely related discipline.
- Preferences will be given to ABD and PhD level candidates from our program, and Instructors who have taught for us previously.
Job Specific Qualifications:
- Evidence of effective teaching experience is necessary.
Responsibilities:
- Developing and/or updating a class syllabus.
- Ordering the appropriate books and materials in advance of the class start date.
- Posting appropriate class materials online
- Preparation of lectures, projects or other student assignments.
- Maintaining regular and timely communication with all students.
- Presenting instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course.
- Meeting all designated class periods.
- Submitting completed mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.
- Grading student assignments and exams in a timely manner.
- Providing departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
