SUMMARY: Under administrative leadership, it is the responsibility of part time faculty to perform tasks which support advancement of the visions, missions, and values of the colleges and District. Part time faculty have responsibilities in regards to their classroom assignment, evaluation of students, curriculum, student advising, professional development, and any assignment-specific needs.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling, OR the equivalent.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
The UMOJA Adjunct Counselor serves as a generalist and a regular member of the Counseling Department faculty committed to the academic success, personal growth, and self-actualization of African American and other students. This entails providing counseling services related to transfer, vocational/occupational programs, career and academic skills development. The UMOJA Adjunct Counselor will assists African American and other students in developing and achieving their immediate and long-range academic and occupational goals. Under the direction of the assigned manager, the position will be responsible for teaching counseling courses, leading workshops, orientations, and seminars; assist in developing and implementing necessary retention programs to meet the program participant needs in support of the advancement of the vision, mission, and values of the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District.
The UMOJA Counselor will participate in the planning of support programs for student athletes and other students of color that result in the educational growth of UMOJA students. The UMOJA Counselor will be expected to actively participate on campus and within the broader community by serving on departmental and college committees and taking a leadership role in campus, community, and professional organizations. This position may include a combination of day and evening assignments. Grossmont College is strongly committed to providing open access and serving a diverse student population. NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience and proficiency in educational, career, and personal counseling at a community college, university or clinical setting. Experience advising African American and other students about certificates, associate degrees, and transfer requirements. Training and experience working with individuals and groups in providing personal and crisis counseling. Ability to use technology in providing counseling services. Experience teaching career planning, college success, workshops or other personal development courses at the post-secondary level. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Applicants must demonstrate a sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, disability, sexual orientation and gender identity backgrounds of community college students.
Preferred Qualifications:
An understanding of the interconnectedness of socio-economic, cultural, environmental, and personal factors contributing to both the barriers to success for African American and other students. Experience working with other campus programs such as student-athletes. Experience developing and maintaining professional relationships between campus programs and community agencies. Experience that demonstrates active participation in community and professional organizations and institutions of higher education. An understanding of current theories and best practices related to supporting student success in the areas of basic skills, retention, academic goal completion, and transfer.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Faculty positions may require long periods of standing and walking in a typical classroom setting. Specific conditions may vary by subjects taught. This is an in person assignment.
