Job Summary
This position is responsible for protecting members of the University Community, maintaining order, and enforcing policies procedures, rules, and regulations of Ohio Northern University. Public Safety officers may be assigned to uniform or plainclothes details. Shift scheduling changes periodically, sometimes with little advanced notice in emergencies. Duties require initiative, resourcefulness, and the ability to analyze situations and in emergencies to adopt a quick, effective, and responsible course of action. The work involves frequent contact with the public and requires the ability to deal with persons in tense situations where attitudes and relations are strained.
Scope
The Public Safety Officer is responsible for providing protection of life and property, enforcement of all rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of Ohio Northern University; responding to emergency and nonemergency situations, and performing other duties as directed.
Principal Responsibilities
- Patrols designated areas via motor vehicle, bicycle or on foot to detect criminal activity; inspects doors, windows and premises of University buildings and properties; to detect suspicious vehicles, persons or situations ; maintains high visibility.
- Responds to calls for service including domestic situations, assaults, burglaries, thefts, property damage, alarms, bomb threats, natural disasters that affect campus, public service duties such as escorts, vehicle lockouts and door unlocks.
- Conducts preliminary/ follow up investigations of complaints or incidents on University property, involving University students, faculty, staff or visitors to campus.
- Take fingerprints for background checks.
- May be asked to testify in court when subpoenaed; escort law enforcement officers or investigators on campus for various situations; provides assistance or backup to public service agencies including fire and EMS on campus and provide twenty-four hour service to Ohio Northern University.
- Operates a variety of standard and specialized equipment and tools associated with public safety including vehicles, OC spray, handcuffs, asp baton, flashlights, fire extinguishers, photographic equipment, telephones, radios, desktop computers, tablets and general office equipment.
- Inspects and maintains assigned vehicles and related equipment assigned to public safety vehicles.
- Follows safety procedures, utilizes equipment, monitors work environment to ensure the safety of University faculty, staff, students and visitors; Performs driving functions in a safe and efficient manner under various conditions and in adverse weather conditions.
- Prepares and completes required forms, reports, correspondence, logs, event reports, damage reports, narratives, missing persons reports, parking registrations and enforces parking regulations on all University lots.
- Enters reports directly into Report Exec RMS, using a computer and its accompanying equipment such as a computer and mouse.
- Communicates in person, via telephone and/or radio, provides assistance and information to those needing help.
- Creates/ maintains positive public relations with the University community and visitors to our campus; Maintains and promotes peace and order; Provides education and information regarding University policies and procedures, personal safety, drug abuse and the law, alcohol laws, crime prevention and other public safety issues.
- Attends shift meetings, training sessions both on and off campus, seminars as required to remain knowledgeable of departmental/ University operations and activities, to promote improved job performance and to stay current with trends in the field of public safety.

Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Possess a valid Ohio drivers license
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Must be able to successfully complete an approved Ohio Peace Officer Training Private Security Firearms Course within 90 days of employment or a time approved by the Chief of Public Safety if the time exceeds the 90 days based on class availability.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ohio Peace Officer training, Private Security, or Military equivalent experience
- First Responder Training
