Job Description Summary

The Community for Rigor (C4R) is a growing and innovative team at the University of Pennsylvania with the goal of transforming research practices through effective educational materials. We envision a global community in The Community for Rigor (C4R) is an initiative, based out of the University of Pennsylvania, dedicated to strengthening scientific rigor and transparency in biomedical research. We develop educational materials, training resources, and community programs that help scientists design, conduct, and report more rigorous and reproducible studies. Check us out at c4r.io

The Social Media & Marketing Associate will play a key role in expanding C4R's visibility and engagement across digital platforms. Will help to exponentially grow C4R's social media following and engagement, which should ultimately lead to new member sign-ups; Plan and produce content that promotes C4R's educational materials, programs, and events through social media, newsletters, and marketing campaigns. The role will also contribute to planning and executing the annual C4R Conference, as well as C4R's presence at other national and international events.

This role is a great fit for a growth strategist with a proven record of exponential, organic social media growth, storytelling, graphic design, and strategic thinking skills - someone who can help shape our voice and reach a growing global community of researchers interested in improving the quality of science.

Note: This position is hybrid, for someone based out of Philadelphia who can work from our office on Tuesdays, or when needed for special projects.

Digital Communications & Social Media

  • Grow our social media following and engagement exponentially and organically, and convert followers into C4R members by encouraging sign-ups to our mailing list.
  • Create and manage engaging content (eye-catching visuals, infographics, and simple animations using our existing brand and design assets) for our social media channels(LinkedIn, Instagram, X/Twitter, YouTube, Bluesky, Slack).
  • On-camera interviewing and facilitation: Interview students, professors, and subject-matter experts in person, and translating insights into engaging video narratives.
  • Write short blog posts, news updates, or feature stories highlighting C4R's resources, community, and events.
  • Manage and grow C4R's YouTube channel - including uploading videos, optimizing titles and descriptions, creating thumbnails, organizing playlists, and experimenting with strategies to grow subscribers and engagement.
  • Help update and maintain the C4R website using Webflow - including uploading new content, adding blog posts and campaign promos, and making changes when required.
  • Track analytics and engagement to help us understand what resonates and where we can grow.
  • Keep our brand voice consistent, positive, and welcoming.

Event & Conference Support

  • Assist in planning and promoting the C4R Conference and other national or international events.
  • Design promotional materials and digital assets.
  • Support event logistics and communications before, during, and after events.
  • Coordinate with partners, vendors, speakers, and venues as needed to ensure smooth execution.

Campaign Strategy & Outreach

  • Contribute ideas and support for promotional and outreach campaigns.
  • Identify and help us connect with new audiences and networks in creative ways.

Email & Newsletter

  • Help design our monthly newsletter and updates.
  • Support list management and engagement tracking.

Perform other related duties and special projects, as assigned, to support C4R's communications and community engagement goals.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in communications, marketing, or a related field and at least 2 years of experience in social media management or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have a proven record of exponential, organic social growth, demonstrated by managing one or more accounts that achieved 5,000-25,000+ net new followers within a 12-month period, along with a minimum 2× increase in average engagement rate, driven entirely through organic content and community strategy (no paid advertising).
  • Strong graphic design and layout skills (Figma & Illustrator proficiency required).
  • Experience with website management platforms like Webflow.
  • Experience with YouTube content creation, management & growth.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and on-camera interviewing skills, with the ability to make people feel at ease and capture authentic, engaging video content.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively - including in person on Tuesdays at our Philadelphia office.
  • Basic familiarity with HTML/CSS or the ability to use AI tools to generate or modify code for web or design tasks.
  • Familiarity with SEO & analytics.
  • We're looking for someone who brings positive energy, curiosity, and a collaborative spirit - a good attitude goes a long way on our small, creative team.

Nice to Have

  • An interest in science communication, scientific rigor, reproducibility, or open science.
  • Experience in academic, nonprofit, or science communication settings.
  • Deep understanding of scientific and academic audiences.
  • Basic video editing or motion graphics skills.
  • Familiarity with Monday.com or other CRM platforms.

This position is part-time (20 hours/week) with a targeted annual pay range of $27,500 - $36,000.
