University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) seeks accomplished UMGC students to work on-site as part-time peer tutors for UMGC undergraduate students at UMGC Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Tutoring will be offered on-site at Joint Base Lewis-McChord via scheduled appointment and drop-in availability. Ideal candidates will demonstrate high-level skills in study strategies and basic research methods and be prepared to support undergraduate students across a wide range of courses and disciplines.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE UMGC PEER TUTOR INCLUDE:
- Promote a professional, respectful, and safe learning environment
- Work more closely with English language learners
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Provide support in study skills, organization skills, time management, reading comprehension, and basic research skills as a UMGC student peer tutor to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in UMGC courses
- Provide clarification, examples, and tutorials that support the student in improving their study skills, problem-solving strategies, and authentic learning
- Create, update, and present guidelines and other resources related to study skills, organization skills, time management, reading comprehension, and basic research skills for students
- Refer students to specific subject tutors for questions about course concepts related to assigned readings, projects, or homework assignments
- Refer students to the library for additional support in research and citation
- Promote a professional, respectful, and safe learning environment
- Work more closely with English language learners
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Be a current undergraduate or graduate student at UMGC with a minimum of two consecutive semesters completed not more than a year ago
- A grade of "A" in any version of PACE (for undergraduate candidates)
- Able to demonstrate fair knowledge of good study skills, reading comprehension, and basic research skills
- Fair knowledge in the use of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint to create content material (e.g., one-pagers and presentations)
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and verbal and written communication skills in English
- Ability to clearly communicate step-by-step instructions in verbal and written formats
- Ability to work closely with students to ensure student success
- Ability to work with diverse student populations
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Letter of recommendation or referral from a UMGC faculty member
- Background in teaching, tutoring, and/or other type of learning support experience initiatives in a face-to-face environment
