PhD in Responsible Human-AI Collaboration (1.0 FTE)

Job Summary

AI systems are increasingly used in high-stakes decision-making, such as healthcare and hiring, yet they often reinforce societal biases, leading to unfair outcomes. This PhD project addresses how to design human-AI collaboration to mitigate biases and foster equitable decision-making. The research will explore characterizing human-AI collaboration, understanding human needs for bias mitigation, and designing socio-technical interventions.

Responsibilities

  • Produce several research articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals and conference proceedings to form the basis of a PhD thesis.
  • Work under the supervision of Dr. Jakob Schoeffer at the University of Groningen.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • A master’s degree (completed or near completion) in artificial intelligence, computational cognitive science, human-computer interaction, computer science, information systems, or another relevant field.
  • A keen interest in interdisciplinary research at the interface of responsible and explainable artificial intelligence, and human-AI interaction.
  • Very good programming skills, preferably in Python.
  • Very good statistics and machine learning skills.
  • First experiences in designing and conducting behavioural experiments desirable.
  • Very good written and verbal communication skills in English.

What the Employer Offers

  • A full-time position (1.0 FTE) with a fixed-term contract of 48 months, starting with a one-year contract renewable for three years based on progress.
  • A salary from €3,059 gross per month in the first year, up to a maximum of €3,881 gross per month in the fourth year.
  • A holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income and an 8.3% year-end bonus.
  • Participation in a PhD training programme and enrolment in the Graduate School of Science and Engineering.
  • Expectation to spend 10% of working hours on teaching and/or supervising students.
