PhD on the topic: Novel magneto-resistive random access memory-based neuromorphic architectures

Job Summary: The REACT MSCA Doctoral Network project focuses on developing a neuromorphic platform that emulates human self-awareness for applications in neuromorphic computing, addressing challenges in energy efficiency, reliability, and security. As a PhD candidate, you will be part of a 15-doctoral candidate program involving interdisciplinary training in material science, device physics, computer architecture, hardware prototyping, compiler design, simulation tools, cybersecurity, and reliability.

Responsibilities: Work on innovative computer architectures and hardware security as part of Dr. Farhad Merchant’s Research Group at the Bernoulli Institute. Collaborate with Prof. Tamalika Banerjee on spintronic devices. Participate in the CogniGron center for neuromorphic computing. Undertake secondments during the first three years and engage in a comprehensive training program including scientific writing, research ethics, time management, and entrepreneurship.

Qualifications and Requirements: Must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field with excellent grades. Demonstrate sound knowledge of computer hardware design and synthesis tools (ASIC, FPGA). Possess good programming and scripting skills. Have excellent English communication, presentation, and writing skills. Be a team player. Knowledge of computing-in-memory and emerging non-volatile memory technologies is advantageous. Must comply with the Mobility Rule (not resided in the host country for more than 12 months in the 3 years before recruitment) and PhD Rule (not already possess a doctoral degree).

What the Employer Offers: A 48-month fixed-term contract at the University of Groningen, with funding for 36 months by MSCA DN and 12 months by other sources. Salary starting at €2,770 gross per month in the first year, up to a maximum of €3,539 gross per month in the fourth year, based on a full-time position (38 hours per week). Includes a holiday allowance of 8% and an 8.3% year-end bonus. Participation in a PhD training program, with the position potentially renewable after the first year based on progress.
