PhD Position Autonomous Reasoning on Robots Operating in the Real, Open World
Job Summary
You will work in the OpenBots laboratory to develop autonomous robots for real-world operations, focusing on common sense capabilities for inspection tasks in dynamic environments like governmental buildings, industrial plants, or train tracks.
Responsibilities
- Research and develop algorithms for world modelling and knowledge representation to create situational awareness based on observations from cameras and microphones.
- Manage information by combining evidences with logic and symbolic reasoning, such as Bayesian networks or Markov logic networks.
- Develop deductive reasoning to handle unknown situations and plan experiments.
- Create situational graphs for task planning, including inductive reasoning for robot capabilities.
- Collaborate in a multidisciplinary team of 5 PhD students across universities and work at external partners like TNO and the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Graduated in fields such as System and Controls, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, or Applied Mathematics.
- Interest in robotics, artificial intelligence, and data science.
- Demonstrable experience in world modeling, machine learning, probabilistic reasoning, and logic reasoning.
- Solid foundations in mathematics, including statistics, linear algebra, and discrete mathematics.
- Programming skills in languages like Python/C++ and tools such as ROS and Gazebo.
- Highly motivated, independent, creative, and a team player.
- Good communication, presentation, and writing skills with proficient English command.
- Nice to have: Experience with publishing scientific work and embedded software/hardware.
What the Employer Offers
- 4-year employment contract, starting with 1.5 years and extendable based on performance.
- Salary from €3059 to €3881 per month, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
