Position Summary:
The CMU Health and Physical Education (HPE) program in the Department of Physical Education and Sport is recruiting for a full-time, 10-month, fixed-term faculty position for the 2026-2027 academic year. This faculty position will work under the supervision of the PES Department Chair. The anticipated start date is August 24, 2026. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. CMU offers a comprehensive benefits package.
This position will entail teaching physical education, athletic coaching, and physical activity courses. The position may also involve coordination of the Sports Skill Instruction Program (PED) or additional responsibilities based on areas of expertise or department needs.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in K-12 Physical Education or Health and Physical Education or related field.
- Master’s degree in Physical Education or Health and Physical Education or Athletic Coaching or related educational field.
- Demonstrated leadership and collaborative skills.
- Effective oral/written communication skills.
- Proficiency in use of technology.
- Demonstrated commitment to working with diverse learners.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree or higher in K-12 Physical Education.
- Three years of successful experience teaching physical education courses in K-12 school settings.
- Three years of successful experience in athletic coaching at the secondary level or higher.
- Experience teaching at the university level, face-to-face, and online.

About the Department:
The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions consists of five academic units (Department of Physical Therapy, Department of Physical Education and Sport, Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, the School of Health Sciences, and the School of Rehabilitation and Medical Science). The college offers undergraduate and/or graduate degree programs in athletic training, audiology, communication sciences and disorders, exercise science, environmental health and safety, health administration, physical education, physical therapy, physician assistant, public health, school and public health education, speech-language pathology, and sport management, delivered by 100+ faculty/staff. The program is growing, having doubled the number of majors over the past five years, and boasts the highest pass rate among first-time test takers on Michigan’s Test for Teacher Certification over the past three years. Students within the program are heavily recruited and hired upon graduation. The program is intentional about preparing pre-service teachers to equip K-12 students with the skills to stay active, fit, and healthy throughout life. The PES Department offers an Athletic Coaching Minor along with the Sports Skill Instruction Program (PED) to all CMU students. The PED program encompasses an array of fitness, outdoor recreation, and sport courses for students to take as electives.
