Job Summary:
The Biological Sciences Department at LBCC offers a wide range of courses, including majors and non-majors in biology, human anatomy and physiology, microbiology, nutrition, and wildlife conservation. The biological sciences instructor must develop, plan, and present organized lectures, laboratory activities, and out-of-class assignments in accordance with approved course outlines. Some courses adhere to curriculum, labs, and assignments developed by the department.
Required Qualifications:
Applications are reviewed for minimum qualifications. In order to be considered, your application must clearly show you meet the minimum qualifications for this position. Master of Science (M.S.) degree in a biological science field, or a Master’s degree in another field and a minimum of either 27 graduate quarter hours or 24 graduate semester hours in biological sciences.
- Related fields include, but are not limited to: nutrition, medicine, biochemistry, and education.
- Provisional: Bachelor’s degree plus 27 graduate quarter hours in the above field(s) AND in active pursuit of master’s degree or doctorate. Applicants hired under this qualification will be approved to teach in a provisional capacity until proof of completion of the minimum qualifications is provided to the college.
Preferred Qualifications:
Prefer recent teaching experience in a community college or university setting. Working knowledge of computer software and Learning Management Systems. Experience with different modalities of instruction, including synchronous and asynchronous online learning. Expertise or experience in teaching from a social justice perspective. Prefer teaching experience in a community college or university setting.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Physical ability to stand for extended periods of time, to kneel, stoop, and lift lightweight objects. Sufficient arm, hand, and finger dexterity to operate laboratory equipment, and to handle chemicals and cultures. Requires normal hearing and speaking skills to communicate with staff and students. Requires visual acuity to read numbers, words and operate lab equipment. Job duties require considerable standing; kneeling, stooping, and crouching plus lifting of light to medium weight (10-50 pounds). Work is performed indoors in a classroom or lab environment, with potential for some exposure to lab chemicals.
Essential Duties:
- Teach Biological Science classes.
- Prepare and develop materials for classes utilizing approved course outcomes. Depending on the course assignment, you may be asked to use a curriculum developed by the department.
- Complete all administrative tasks associated with teaching a course: assign and grade student work, establish reasonable communication with students, report student attainment of course outcomes, maintain student records, comply with college policies and processes related to teaching workload.
- Keep abreast of development in subject area and educational technology, innovative teaching techniques, and continuously strive for professional improvement.
- Establish and maintain opportunities for reasonable and consistent out-of-class contact with students.
- Assure that lab equipment is appropriately used, following all safety protocols and procedures. Verify that all equipment is accounted for at the end of each laboratory section.
- Exemplify and promote the mission of LBCC.
- Connect students to college support services and resources to promote student success and retention. Maintain reasonable communication with college support services to this end.
- Work effectively with students and staff of various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds and ages. Promote both a classroom environment and a curriculum of equity and inclusivity.
- Interact with supervisors, colleagues, and staff as part of a team.
- Participate as assigned in occasional department and advisory meetings.
