Overview

Our research team is accepting applications for a full-time Post-doctoral Associate (job code 9546) based in the Division of Epidemiology and Community Health at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health, under the mentorship of Dr. Horacio Duarte.

Position Description

The position will be supported by an NIH-funded project focused on evaluating the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of interventions aimed at eliminating mother to child transmission (eMTCT) of HIV in African contexts. We seek a highly motivated individual with a background in decision analysis and simulation modeling methods who is interested in applying these tools to answer policy-relevant questions about eMTCT interventions. Our group is evaluating a wide range of eMTCT-relevant interventions, including:

  1. maternal viral load monitoring;
  2. retention support;
  3. injectable long-acting antiretroviral therapy (ART);
  4. pre-exposure prophylaxis; and
  5. expanding maternal ART coverage.

We envision the postdoc having opportunities to lead some projects as first-author, as well as contribute to other projects as a co-author. Dr. Duarte will work with the postdoc to map out projects that will support their long-term goals and interests.

Duration: This appointment is for 1-2 years depending on satisfactory performance and funding availability.

Start date: The start date is flexible, but preference will be given to applicants who can start by July 2026.

Annual Salary: The anticipated salary range for the job is $61,008 to $75,000, based on years of prior postdoctoral experience and qualifications.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • A recent PhD (or MD) degree in a relevant discipline, such as decision science, health services research, epidemiology, applied mathematics, or industrial engineering. Expected graduation in Spring 2026 is acceptable.
  • Strong quantitative background with demonstrated proficiency in Matlab, or in another programming language, such as R or Python, with motivation to learn Matlab.
  • Ability to work independently as well as a member of a research team.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written communication.
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive, respectful workplace.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in decision analysis and developing computer-based simulations to model either infectious or non-infectious diseases.
  • Evidence of research productivity in mathematical modeling, decision analysis, or related field.
  • Experience using a distributed version control system, such as Github, to track code changes and manage software collaboratively.
  • Experience with HIV outcomes research and ideally familiarity with eMTCT-relevant interventions.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $61,008 to $75,000 annually; depending on education/qualifications/experience
