Description
The postdoctoral researcher in this position aims to understand and harvest unique properties of dynamic magnetic fields in synergy with ferromagnetic catalysts to upgrade standard thermal and/or electrocatalytic catalytic reactions. Besides the central work to be carried out in chemical engineering at Clemson, extensive collaborations with materials science researchers at Clemson and pilot tests and DOE user facilities at national laboratories are anticipated in this position. Other duties as assigned.
Responsibilities:
- 20% Propose research questions, hypotheses, and work plans in a rigorous and organized manner independently. Communicate the above information timely and effectively with PIs, collaborators, and other lab members, and be receptive to colleagues’ feedback and embrace the suggestions agreed on by the team.
- 30% Execute confirmed research plans in a safe, rigorous, transparent, and timely manner. Be able to set research priorities upon discussions with the PI, and communicate research progress, results, uncertainties and obstacles in a proactive, timely, and organized manner. Be able to operate or quickly learn to operate instruments for materials synthesis, characterization, and reaction studies. In the event of in-house instrument shutdown or malfunctioning, be able to perform initial troubleshooting and, if necessary, engage university facility and/or vendor support in a timely manner. Travel to national labs are expected on a monthly basis for collaborative research.
- 30% Generate formal technical reports in a rigorous, organized, and timely manner to clearly communicate research ideas and corresponding research results. Be receptive to revisions and suggestions made by coauthors, and embrace the often situation that good reports take multiple rounds of careful revisions and proofreading. Support the PI in grant writing.
- 10% Serve as a role model for graduate, undergraduate, and high school students working in the labs and offices of the group in the perspectives of time management, support to science and education, experimental operations, and workplace ethics.
- 10% Create and maintain a safe working environment for oneself as well as for peer researchers.
Qualifications
Required: Recipient of PhD by Summer 2025 in engineering and physical science disciplines. US citizenship is required due to the nature of the work in collaboration with DOE national labs. Preferred Experience: Proven research experience in thermo-, electro-, and/or electromagneto-catalysis ranging from catalyst synthesis, reaction studies, and advanced characterizations.
