Postdoc Aerothermodynamics of Innovative Solutions for Grazing Flow Heat Exchangers
Job Summary
This project investigates the turbulence dynamics of flow adjacent to heated surfaces, focusing on boundary layer turbulence over non-adiabatic walls under high Reynolds number conditions. It aims to improve high-performance surface heat exchangers and innovate their aerothermodynamic design for sustainable aircraft thermal management.
Responsibilities
- Conduct high-fidelity experiments using flow and temperature measurement techniques.
- Investigate how boundary layer flow physics change due to non-adiabatic (heated) wall conditions.
- Analyze the receptivity of boundary layer flows to spatial modifications of wall-temperature and roughness.
- Explore ways to enhance aerothermodynamic performance, such as reducing drag in grazing flow or enhancing heat transfer.
- Lead the project on the TU Delft side, with opportunities to steer fundamental research aspects.
- Work closely with a team on multi-disciplinary aerothermodynamic research and contribute to related projects.
Qualifications and Requirements
- A M.Sc. degree with a focus in fluid mechanics and heat transfer (e.g., aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or applied physics); PhD preferred for post-doctoral candidates.
- Fundamental knowledge of fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and viscous fluid flows.
- Strong analytical skills; knowledge of physics, math, and mechanical design is an asset.
- Strong affinity with modeling of non-adiabatic fluid flows and optimization of low-fidelity models for aero-thermal systems.
- Affinity with design of experiments, experimental techniques, data processing, and programming (e.g., Matlab and/or Python).
- Hands-on experience with lab-work, experimental design, and hardware construction.
- Excellent communication skills in spoken and written English, aptitude for teamwork, creativity, assertive attitude, and perseverance.
What the Employer Offers
- A 2-year contract for 32-38 hours per week.
- Salary and benefits in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
- Customizable compensation package, discounts on health insurance, monthly work costs contribution, and flexible work schedules.
- Support for relocation to the Netherlands, including events for settling in and a Dual Career Programme.
- An inclusive, diverse, and stimulating working environment at TU Delft, with opportunities for professional development in a world-class research community.
