Postdoc: Development and characterization of mycelium-inspired, fiber-reinforced modular walls
Job Summary
As a postdoctoral researcher, you will investigate fiber-reinforced structures in nature, such as fungi, using techniques like additive manufacturing, computer simulations, materials testing, and characterization of 3D structures. You will collaborate with architects, designers, and engineers to develop biomimetic models for next-generation construction materials, focusing on how mycelial structures adapt to mechanical loads.
Responsibilities
- Developing an experimental platform for growing mycelium on agar plates exposed to various mechanical loads (e.g., compression, tension, bending, twisting).
- Imaging the mycelial network and using fluorescence microscopy to investigate material distribution.
- Developing analysis tools for 3D reconstruction of mycelial networks.
- Modelling the biophysical and biomechanical properties of the mycelial networks.
Qualifications and Requirements
- A recent university PhD degree (or equivalent) in engineering, biology, architecture, and/or industrial design.
- Strong analytical skills and innovative attitude.
- Previous experience with finite element simulations and/or rapid prototyping.
- Good programming and image analysis skills (e.g., Python, MeVisLab, Blender).
- A clear affinity for the field of (bio)mechanics.
- Must be a team player with excellent communication skills and language level C1 in English.
What the Employer Offers
Wageningen University & Research offers excellent terms including sabbatical leave, study leave, partially paid parental leave, flexible working hours for work-life balance, focus on vitality with sports facilities, a fixed year-end bonus of 8.3%, excellent pension scheme, and a competitive gross salary between €3,546 and €5,538 for a full-time working week of 38 hours. A temporary contract for two years is provided, along with opportunities for growth, development, and support for international employees.
