Postdoctoral Research Associate, Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering

Position Highlights

The Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Arizona is hiring a qualified and highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate to join our Computational Fluid Dynamics Laboratory with a focus on Direct Numerical Simulations for investigating laminar-turbulent transition for hypersonic boundary layers.

The successful candidate will integrate experimental measurements, multi-physics modeling, and advanced ML techniques to enhance predictive analytics for battery safety. This position involves close collaboration with team members and participation in a feedback loop to refine AI algorithms. A detailed knowledge of thermal-electrochemical battery testing is not required, a general understanding is sufficient.

Outstanding UA benefits include health, dental, vision, and life insurance; paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays; UA/ASU/NAU tuition reduction for the employee and qualified family members; access to UA recreation and cultural activities; and more!

The University of Arizona has been recognized for our innovative work-life programs. For more information about working at the University of Arizona and relocations services, please click here.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform high fidelity direct numerical simulations (DNS) as well as local and global stability analysis for investigating shock boundary layer interactions and extracting the relevant hydrodynamic instability mechanisms.
  • Analyze data using Fourier transforms, proper orthogonal decomposition, and dynamic mode decomposition where applicable and understand the underlying flow instabilities.
  • Collaborate with other members in the Computational Fluid Dynamics Laboratory and make significant progress in the understanding of relevant physics to the above mentioned flow configurations.
  • Foster collaborations within the Department, with other units across the University, and with team members at other institutes.
  • Prepare and publish research findings in high-impact journals and present at conferences.
  • Assist in writing grant proposals to secure funding for ongoing and future research.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Effective collaboration skills and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret complex data sets.
  • Competence in preparing detailed technical reports and presentations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field of study.
  • Selected applicant must have PhD conferred upon hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience with high-performance computing.
  • Experience with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) codes.

Notice of Availability of the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report

In compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act), each year the University of Arizona releases an Annual Security Report (ASR) for each of the University's campuses. These reports disclose information including Clery crime statistics for the previous three calendar years and policies, procedures, and programs the University uses to keep students and employees safe, including how to report crimes or other emergencies and resources for crime victims. As a campus with residential housing facilities, the Main Campus ASR also includes a combined Annual Fire Safety report with information on fire statistics and fire safety systems, policies, and procedures. Paper copies of the Reports can be obtained by contacting the University Compliance Office at cleryact@arizona.edu.
