Position Highlights

The Systems and Industrial Engineering (SIE) Department at the University of Arizona is seeking a qualified and highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate.

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Postdoctoral Research Associate to join our team to support the development of tools and models to help designers and manufacturers predict manufacturing feasibility, complexity, and cost. The successful candidate will work on innovative projects involving coding in Python and XML, software development, analysis of 3D CAD models, and manufacturing cost estimation, with a focus on additive manufacturing and casting processes.

This position could be eligible for a hybrid work week or a flexible schedule.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop, test, and maintain Python-based software tool for manufacturing cost estimation.
  • Conduct research on advanced methodologies for cost estimation in manufacturing processes.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team and industry partners to develop cost estimation workflows that fit within existing manufacturing systems.
  • Develop and analyze large datasets to improve accuracy and efficiency of cost estimation models.
  • Solicit quotes for and oversee production using various metal manufacturing production processes from manufacturers.
  • Foster collaborations within the Department with other units across the University, and with team member at other institutes.
  • Assist in writing grant proposals to secure funding for ongoing and future research.
  • Mentor graduate and undergraduate students involved in related research projects.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of additive manufacturing processes and manufacturing cost estimation techniques.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong programming skills in Python.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Selected applicant must have PhD conferred upon hire.
  • Federal regulations require that the incumbent be a U.S. citizen, legal permanent resident, or have another protected status under 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3) to be ITAR/EAR compliant.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with ANSYS and CAD tools.
  • Experience with XML scripting.
  • Experience in software development, including version control (e.g., Git), software testing, and documentation.
