Background

To create and contribute to the creation of knowledge by undertaking a specified range of activities within an established research programme and/or specific research project.

The School of Mathematics welcomes applications for two research fellowships in Combinatorics to work with Dr Eoin Long on the EPSRC funded New Investigator Award ā€œA high-dimensional approach to Ramsey Theoryā€.

The posts are available for a period of 12 months in the first instance, with a possibility of further extension. The starting date is 1 May 2026, though there is some flexibility here.

The successful candidates will join a community of researchers in the Combinatorics group within the School of Mathematics, University of Birmingham. The group consists of 7 permanent staff as well as many postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers and has proven track-record in mentoring and supporting the development of early-career researchers. Role Summary

  • Work within specified research grants and projects and contribute to writing bids
  • Operate within area of specialism
  • Analyse and interpret research findings and results

Main Duties

The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below.

  • Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required
  • Contribute to writing bids for research funding
  • Analyse and interpret data
  • Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
  • Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc
  • Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline

Person Specification

  • First degree in area of specialism andnormally, a higher degree (or near to completion) relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications
  • High level analytical capability
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
