The Rector of the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences invites applications for an open competition for the position of Postdoctoral Researcher (Assistant Professor) POST DOC in the research staff group within the project: “Interatrial Septal Pouch and Endocardial Changes Increase the Risk of Arterial Thromboembolic Disease – the SPACE CAT Study” at the Department of Pathology.
About the project
The position is funded by a research project carried out at the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences (UPWr) within the SONATA-20 competition of the National Science Centre (NCN).
The project investigates the relationship between structural and pathological changes of the interatrial septal pouch and endocardium and the risk of arterial thromboembolic disease. The successful candidate will contribute to the histological, immunohistochemical, molecular, micro-CT and electron microscopy analyses conducted within the project.
Job description
The successful candidate will be responsible for research tasks specified in the project, including:
- assessment of pathological changes of the endocardium of the interatrial septal pouch using histological, immunohistochemical and PCR-based methods;
- assessment of the structure of the interatrial septal pouch, including its size, shape and volume, using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT);
- assessment of the endocardial structure of the interatrial septal pouch using electron microscopy;
- assessment of pathological changes of the endocardium of the free wall of the left atrium using histological, immunohistochemical, PCR-based and electron microscopy methods;
- assessment of the presence of thrombi in the left atrium using histological, immunohistochemical, PCR-based and electron microscopy methods;
- analysis, interpretation and processing of research data and preparation of research results;
- conducting independent and collaborative research in the field of veterinary sciences, particularly veterinary pathology, including participation in activities aimed at obtaining external funding for research projects;
- dissemination of research results through publications in scientific journals indexed in Scopus and/or Web of Science;
- participation in national and international scientific conferences and symposia;
- participation in workshops and training aimed at developing professional and research competences;
- participation in organisational activities of the Department and the University;
- performing other duties assigned by the Head of the Department, consistent with the profile and activities of the Department and the University.
Requirements for the candidate
Candidates must:
- hold at least a PhD in veterinary sciences, preferably in veterinary pathology, or in a related field;
- have English language proficiency at a minimum B2 level;
- have experience working with animal-derived tissues and demonstrate knowledge of their specific characteristics;
- preferably have experience in laboratory research, including the use of immunohistochemistry, molecular biology techniques and/or electron microscopy;
- have a good knowledge of animal cardiac pathology;
- have a documented scientific and publication record;
- demonstrate good organisational skills, the ability to solve research problems, effective communication skills and the ability to work as part of a research team.
Mandatory project-specific eligibility criteria
In addition to the requirements listed above, candidates must meet all of the following eligibility criteria applicable to the postdoctoral position funded by the NCN project:
a) The candidate must have obtained their doctoral degree in the year of employment in the project or within the 12 years preceding 1 January of the year of employment in the project. If the candidate has obtained more than one doctoral degree, the date of the first doctoral degree shall be taken as the reference date.
The eligibility period may be extended by documented career breaks, including periods of more than 90 days of documented sickness benefits or rehabilitation benefits related to incapacity for work. The period may additionally be extended by the number of months of parental or childcare leave granted under the Polish Labour Code. In the case of female candidates, the eligibility period may be extended by 18 months for each child born or adopted, if this method of accounting for career breaks is more favourable to the candidate.
b) The doctoral degree must have been obtained at an institution other than the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences (UPWr), where the candidate is to be employed, or the candidate must have completed at least a 10-month, continuous and documented postdoctoral fellowship at an institution other than the institution implementing the project (UPWr) and in a country other than the country in which the candidate obtained their doctoral degree.
c) During the period in which the candidate receives remuneration from UPWr in connection with employment under the present NCN-funded project, they must not receive any other remuneration from direct costs of research projects funded under NCN competitions.
d) During the period in which the candidate receives remuneration from UPWr in connection with employment under the present NCN-funded project, they must not receive remuneration from another employer under an employment contract, including an employer based outside Poland.
e) During the period in which the candidate receives remuneration from UPWr in connection with employment under the present NCN-funded project, they must not receive pension benefits from the social security system.

Statutory requirements
Candidates must also meet the requirements specified in Article 113 of the Polish Act of 20 July 2018 – Law on Higher Education and Science, namely:
- enjoy full public rights;
- have full legal capacity;
- have not been convicted by a final and binding judgment of an intentional offence or an intentional tax offence;
- have not been subject to a disciplinary penalty involving dismissal from employment at a higher education institution with a prohibition on working at higher education institutions for a period of 6 months to 5 years, or deprivation of the right to practise the profession of an academic teacher for a period of 10 years.
We offer
- full-time employment;
- planned employment period: 24 months, from 1 October 2026 to 30 September 2028;
- remuneration for the postdoctoral position of up to PLN 280,000 in total gross employment cost (gross-gross) over the employment period, including all components of remuneration, such as the additional annual remuneration and/or other remuneration components due to the employee under the applicable regulations of UPWr;

Candidates who do not possess a certificate but meet the requirement of English proficiency at a minimum B2 level shall submit a declaration of language proficiency; verification will take place during the interview stage.
Candidates who do not hold a language certificate but meet the requirement of English proficiency at a minimum B2 level may submit a declaration confirming their English language skills. Their proficiency will be verified during the interview.
