UNSW Medicine & Health is a national leader in learning, teaching and research, with close affiliations to several of Australia’s finest hospitals, research institutes and health care organisations.

The Discipline of Paediatrics and Child Health within the School of Clinical Medicine leads the delivery of educational and research activities aimed at the maintenance of child and adolescent health from the neonatal period until 18 years of age.

Details of the role

The Program Manager, Rare Disease for Diagnosis4All (D4All): Co-designing Equitable and Sustainable Solutions to Reduce the Diagnostic Odyssey plays a senior leadership role in the planning, coordination and delivery of a complex, multi-partner MRFF-funded genomics and health equity research program.

D4All is a statewide, interdisciplinary program focused on improving equitable, timely and culturally safe access to genomic diagnoses for priority populations in NSW, including First Nations peoples, culturally and linguistically diverse communities, and people living in regional and remote areas. The Program Manager is responsible for overarching program management, governance, reporting, quality assurance and coordination across two integrated research streams (Exploration & Preparation; Implementation & Sustainment).

The role works closely with Chief and Associate Investigators, project officers, partner organisations, NSW Health, and consumer and community representatives to ensure successful delivery of milestones, compliance with research governance and ethics requirements, and high-quality stakeholder engagement. The Program Manager has a critical role in supporting authentic, respectful and culturally safe consumer and community engagement throughout the program lifecycle.

The role reports to the Associate Professor Elizabeth Palmer. They will work closely with other members of the Rare Diseases NSW Group at UNSW as well as with staff of the Sydney Children’s Hospital Clinical Genetics Department. The Genetic Counsellor Support will also participate in ongoing training and personal and group supervision in genetic counselling.

Some key skills required:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in a health, allied health, public health, research, or related discipline, with subsequent relevant experience; or equivalent competence gained through a combination of education, training and experience. Genetic counselling expertise or expertise in a genomic or rare disease research program would be highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated senior-level program or project management experience in complex, multi-stakeholder environments, preferably in health, research or public sector settings.
  • Demonstrated capacity to provide supervision and mentorship to junior research genetic counsellors, as well as research staff and students/trainees requiring genetics education.
  • Highly developed written and verbal communication skills, with strong attention to detail and ability to produce high-quality reports and documentation.
  • Knowledge of budgeting and resource allocation procedures.
  • High level of proficiency with digital systems and tools, including Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams and Zoom.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including researchers, clinicians, government, community and consumer groups.
  • Excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.
