Heralded as a hub of undergraduate innovation, the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (VPUE) creates and sustains meaningful interactions between students and faculty both within and outside the classroom. The Promoting Academic Communities and Engagement (PACE) initiative aims to address barriers to highly effective, engaging, rigorous classes through communication, coordination, and support for instructors; interventions and messaging to students; and changes in institutional policy. It is one of the top five priorities for the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education. The PACE Program Manager will lead and manage projects or functions related to the PACE initiative and other initiatives as time permits. The PACE PM will serve as a thought partner to faculty and staff initiative leaders, bringing his/her/their teaching experience and understanding of the educational ecosystem to help translate discussions into action, including planning communication strategy, gathering and creating materials and interventions, and organizing and commemorating next steps from stakeholder discussions. The PACE PM reports to the Senior Associate Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead the planning and operations for programs or functions that have significant impact on undergraduate education and require cross-unit collaboration and expertise. For example, partner with the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) and other relevant units to develop tools to support faculty, and collaborate with Academic Advising, CTL, and Student Affairs, among others, to develop interventions for students.
  • Evaluate initiative efforts, including working with VPUE’s assessment and program evaluation team, Institutional Research and Decision Support, and Learning Technology and Spaces to embed assessment measures into program efforts, and identify and track progress on various metrics of success. Identify issues, and develop alternative solutions which may include changes to programs, policies and procedures.
  • Review and analyze trends to advise and develop recommendations to achieve or modify the goals of the project. Track and research related efforts at other higher education institutions, as well as press coverage. Perform research and literature review on evidence basis for engaging learners.
  • Manage and contribute to the development of outreach and communication strategy, including developing relationships with key partners in CTL, Academic Advising, and the Schools; drafting faculty-facing communication (new PACE website, newsletters, possible “agony aunt” column, etc) addressing best practices and common challenges in the classroom. For students, organize and lead focus groups and other efforts to gather input from students; implement communication strategy (e.g., orientation materials and messaging, social media, etc) in coordination with Academic Advising, CTL, and Student Affairs units. These efforts may include relationship development and compliance.
  • Oversee student summer intern(s) developing and implementing student communications. May also supervise work of additional staff pertaining to the initiative.
  • Manage the logistics of initiative support including scheduling, reporting, documentation and collating. For example, support VPUE leaders in establishing agendas, facilitate reporting to the Faculty Senate and other bodies.
  • Represent the program or function within the department, unit or school and provide information and/or training. Represent the program or function at the university level and/or to internal stakeholders and constituencies.
  • May develop and/or oversee budgets; manage finances including monitoring, analyzing, forecasting, and reporting.
  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks. Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation. Occasionally use a telephone. Rarely lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 11-20 pounds.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree and five years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish priorities, manage shifting priorities, and handle numerous time-sensitive projects with multiple deadlines.
  • Ability to accomplish goals working through formal and informal channels, with diplomacy and tactfulness.
  • Demonstrated creativity, problem solving, critical analysis, initiative, judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and meet budget goals.
  • Demonstrated solid planning and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated experience working independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to direct the work of others, including exercising influence without direct authority over the work of others.
  • Ability to understand the needs of and ability to work with diverse stakeholders.

In addition, preferred requirements include:

  • Experience and understanding of the higher education environment and of working with faculty, staff, and undergraduate students at a residential university
  • Teaching/instructional experience in higher education
  • Knowledge and experience of Stanford
  • Knowledge and experience of communication strategies, including web, social media.

The expected pay range for this position is $120,038 to $153,486 per annum.

Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of the salary or hourly wage the university reasonably expects to pay for a position upon hire. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
