Provost and Chief Academic Officer
Job Details
This position serves as the Vice President, Provost and Chief Academic Officer (Provost). All academic functions and supporting services report to this office. The Provost is responsible for the day-to-day academic and associated administrative operations of NPS, supervises a diverse faculty and staff, and ensures the quality and integrity of academic programs. Additionally, the Provost leads long-term strategic planning for the campus community, manages the NPS academic budget, and advises the President on all matters affecting the academic enterprise and institutional priorities.
Duties
- Manages the governance and overall administration of the academic enterprise
- Oversees academic quality across instructional and research programs
- Ensures academic units are adequately resourced to meet program objectives and achieve the desired student outcomes
- Promotes collaboration and teamwork across academic departments strengthening interdisciplinary teaching, research, and service initiatives
- Works closely with the command leadership to enhance efficiency and alignment with institutional proprieties
- Administers faculty promotion and tenure processes Leads and manages institutional accreditation processes
- Guides the development of new academic programs
- Leads long-range planning to maintain and improve academic program quality and service to military and defense communities
- Provides academic advice, consultation, and service to Naval and Defense activities, as well as to the broader scholarly community, as required
- Ensures annual operational plans align with the University's short- and long-term goals and objectives
- Represents the institution in interactions with the Department of Navy (DoN) and Department of War (DoW)
- Performs other duties commonly associated with faculty responsibilities, as required
Scope of Duties
Provost directly manages the Office of the Provost and University Librarian, and provides guidance in the operations of research programs, student services, information resources, and finance and administration of the school. The Provost has significant off-campus impacts through services offered to DoN activities, DoW activities, and professional organizations.
Requirements
- Doctoral or terminal degree in the field relevant to the mission and functions of NPS
- Minimum five years of experience in higher education leadership roles with substantial; responsibility in both academic and administrative management (at the level of academic unit head or higher)
- Proven mastery of leadership and strategic management
- Demonstrated record of scholarship and teaching commensurate with rank of full professor; eligible for tenure as full professor at NPS
Conditions of Employment
- Must be a U.S. citizen
- Must be able and willing to travel
Preferred Qualifications
- STEM background
- Senior level experience in government and/or in the defense sector
- Knowledge of DoN operations and processes
- Veteran status and honorable discharge from any branch of the United States military
Special Requirements
Position designated non-critical sensitive (requiring Secret eligibility) unless otherwise designated via the Position Designation Tool on the AD PD Addendum; incumbent is required to file OGE 450, Confidential Financial Disclosure Report.

Four Essay Questions:
- How has your commitment to the Constitution and the founding principles of the United States inspired you to pursue this role within the Federal government? Provide a concrete example from professional, academic, or personal experience.
- In this role, how would you use your skills and experience to improve government efficiency and effectiveness? Provide specific examples where you improved processes, reduced costs, or improved outcomes.
- How would you help advance the President's Executive Orders and policy priorities in this role? Identify one or two relevant Executive Orders or policy initiatives that are significant to you and explain how you would help implement them if hired.
- How has a strong work ethic contributed to your professional, academic or personal achievements? Provide one or two specific examples and explain how those qualities would enable you to serve effectively in this position.
NOTICE OF VETERANS PREFERENCE:
