Public Safety Officer III, Investigative Sergeant
Job Overview
The Public Safety Department conducts all investigations for the College and collaborates with Human Resources, the Title IX Coordinator, the Student Success Coordinator, Local Police, and the Code of Conduct committee as needed for investigations.
The Public Safety Investigator is responsible for conducting investigations that are pandemic/health-related, rise to an elevated level, and/or are designated as Title IX cases.
1) The Investigator is responsible for all future pandemic investigations, as well as coordinating with the Burlington County Health Department in all things health-related.
2) The Investigator is responsible for investigating all cases reported to the Public Safety Department that rise to a level that requires an advanced degree of skill and effort to conduct an appropriate, thorough investigation in a consistent and timely manner, or, assigned by their supervisor.
3) The Investigator is responsible for investigating all Title IX complaints under the direction of the Title IX Coordinator.
The Public Safety Investigator is under the direct supervision of the assigned Squad Leader (Grade III or IV) and coordinates directly with the Public Safety Department Administration, and/or the Title IX Coordinator regarding investigative matters.
Additionally, the Public Safety Investigator will continue to support the department when investigator duties are not required by patrolling assigned areas of the campus to include but not limited to offices, buildings, and/or parking areas, and reports via telephone or radio. The Public Safety Investigator acts to protect persons, property, prevent fires, theft, vandalism, disorder, and damage to college property.
This is a Public Safety union position as stated in the Public Safety collective bargaining agreement. Grade level III.
1) Investigate all Title IX cases as assigned by the Title IX Coordinator or their designee.
2) Investigate all cases reported to the Public Safety Department as assigned and work in coordination with Human Resources and Student Support, as well as outside law enforcement agencies.
Overall Purpose and Responsibility
The primary and most important overall responsibility of all employees is to provide service in a pleasant, helpful, and effective manner to our students and other members of the College community.
Education Required
Bachelor's degree preferred
Experience Required
Six months of related experience or training in conducting investigations and report writing
Skills/Abilities/Knowledge/Other Requirements
- Attend and complete to standard all assigned departmental training
- Be able to work in a paramilitary structure with a well-defined chain of command
- Arrive on time and properly attired (Applicants may be required to wear a uniform.) for assigned shifts
- Be available for shift and weekend work plus assigned to multiple campuses are a requirement of this position
- Record and report information concerning complaints and refers it to Shift leaders.
- Issues traffic tickets and/or warnings for violations of traffic/parking regulations and polices.
- Patrols corridors, parking areas and roadways. Directs traffic as assigned.
- Assist college population with jumpstarting, vehicle unlocking and personal escorts to vehicles as assigned.
- Provides emergency medical treatment. (To level of certification.)
- Be able to complete reports of incidents and fill out work related forms.
- Work indoors and outdoors, sometime in extreme weather conditions and temperature.
- Must be able to spend extended periods standing, walking and climbing stairs. Must be able to maintain a vigorous working pace.
- Answer telephones and communicate using portable radios and base station radios in compliance with department and FCC standards
- Assist persons on campus
- Operate department identification card equipment, issue ID cards and parking stickers
- Have good interpersonal communications skills, be able to work as a team member, and have solid computer and keyboarding skills
- Keep work related topics confidential
- Be exposed to verbal and possible physical abuse by irate persons
- Perform any other assigned tasks as necessary
