Position Summary
The Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) performs a wide variety of health and safety related duties for the Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) Department.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Manages the University’s radiation safety programs, ensuring compliance with all applicable federal and state regulations.
- The RSO supervises and directs radiation safety staff in all aspects of campus radioactive materials safety including radioisotope use, radiation producing equipment, safety training personnel and environmental monitoring, instrument calibration, and radioactive waste collection and disposal.
- The RSO must develop and implement policies, operating procedures, and training programs.
- Reviews applications to use radioactive materials and radiation producing machines.
- Prepares all related reports required by regulatory agencies.
The RSO has frequent oral and written communication with the campus administrators (including the Associate Vice President for Research), professional staff (Ph.D., MD, Senior Researchers, Lab Technicians), Facilities Supervisors whose staff work around radiological hazards, graduate and undergraduate students, and outside vendors. Thus, the RSO must communicate well with individuals and be able to independently recognize potentially unsafe conditions and act accordingly to correct the situation.
The work assignments are primarily based on maintaining compliance with applicable state and federal regulations and standards.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in health physics or degree in science or engineering with courses in radiation protection.
- Three years’ experience working within a health physics or radiation safety program.
- Practical abilities with ionizing radiation sources, radiation equipment, and associated safety instrumentation.
- Knowledge of applicable state and federal regulations pertaining to radiological compliance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Masters degree in health physics or graduate degree in science or engineering with courses in radiation protection.
- Certification as a Certified Health Physicist (CHP) by the American Academy of Health Physics.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
- Experience in an academic/research environment with experience in a research nuclear reactor environment preferred.
- Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Outlook platform.
- Must be medically cleared each year to wear a respirator and pass an annual medical physical and be successfully fit-tested in a full-face air-purifying respirator.
Physical Demands
Must be able to wear personal protective equipment including respirators and self-contained breathing apparatus.
Salary Range
$100,000 - $107,000
