Job Description

Responsible for the development, implementation, and oversight of the radiation safety program across all three campuses and affiliated entities, in accordance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.

Duties:

  • Develops and implements radiation safety policies and procedures in collaboration with the Radiation Safety Committee to ensure the safe installation, operation, and maintenance of ionizing radiation producing devices.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations governing ionizing radiation and radioactive materials.
  • Manages and coordinates regulatory inspections related to radiation use and radioactive materials.
  • Maintains radioactive materials licenses, including preparing and submitting new applications, renewals, and amendments.
  • Reviews and approves requests for the use and purchase of radioactive materials, radiation-producing equipment, and radio isotopes to ensure regulatory and institutional compliance.
  • Conducts radiation surveys and inspections of facilities using radioactive materials or radiation-producing equipment.
  • Provides and delivers radiation safety training and in-service education programs.
  • Ensures availability and proper use of personnel radiation monitoring equipment.
  • Oversees emergency response activities involving incidents or accidents with radioactive materials.
  • Supervises the collection, processing, storage, and disposal of radioactive waste.
  • Maintains required records and documentation related to personnel approvals, inspections, waste disposal, incidents, and regulatory compliance.
  • Prepares and submits required reports to regulatory agencies.
  • Performs and/or oversees the testing, inspection, calibration, and recordkeeping of radiation monitoring and survey equipment.
  • Provides technical guidance to physicians, researchers, and investigators on the safe use of ionizing radiation, associated risks, and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborates with the Public Information Officer and represents the institution regarding radiation safety related communications.
  • Stay current on changes in radiation safety regulations, standards, and best practices.
  • Performs other job related duties as required or assigned to successfully fulfill the functions of the position.

Job Requirements

Required Education: Master's degree in physics, health, medical or radiation physics, or related field, AND:

  • 5 years of experience in radiation safety compliance, health physics, medical physics, radiation physics, or a closely related field

Skills:

  • Advanced technical knowledge of the physics and biology of ionizing radiation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for assessing radiation hazards and implementing corrective measures.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills to develop policies, training, and regulatory reports.
  • Comprehensive understanding of federal, state, and local regulations governing the use of radioactive materials and radiation-producing equipment.
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, and management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across diverse teams.
  • Ability to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of a Radiation Safety Officer as required by the State of Oklahoma or the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
  • Ability to interpret complex regulations, technical data, and research protocols to ensure compliance.
  • Knowledge of recordkeeping and reporting requirements related to radiation safety compliance.

Certifications:

  • Board certification by one of the following or equivalent training and experience:
    • American Board of Health Physics (ABHP) OR
    • Completion of at least 200 hours of classroom and laboratory training in radiation physics and instrumentation, radiation protection, mathematics related to radioactivity measurement, radiation biology, and radiopharmaceutical chemistry, combined with relevant practical experience and 1 year of Preceptorship for radiation safety under the supervision of a Radiation Safety Officer on a Commission or Agreement State License that authorizes the medical use of byproduct material.
  • Valid Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire, to operate University vehicles as required.

  • Work is performed in a combination of office, laboratory, clinical, and field environments.
  • Exposure to biohazardous, chemical, biological, or radioactive material.
  • Occasional after-hours or on-call availability may be required to respond to emergencies, incidents, or regulatory inspections.
  • Travel is required to multiple campus locations, affiliated facilities, and off-site location.
