Title: Relief Manager

Position Purpose:

Bates Dining, Conferences and Campus Events oversees all student dining. The Relief Manager position is responsible for overseeing meals in Commons, ensuring that departmental/college standards are maintained as outlined in the Dining Services Professional Guide, college handbook, sector specific expectations/policies, 2014 Food Code and Maine State / Federal liquor regulations. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, daily position placement and training, filling open shifts, pre-shift meetings, quality assurance and development of customer relations and support in other areas of the operation as needed.

As such, this position calls for someone with the demonstrated ability to develop positive relationships with individuals and groups with varying backgrounds, perspectives, education and skills. Ability to work as part of a dynamic management team who embraces communication and inclusiveness is essential to the candidates’ success. Exemplary organizational, time management, negotiation and conflict resolution skills are a must, as well as a demonstrated ability to teach others.

Job Duties:

  • Oversees the daily operation of the service and sanitation components of student dining.
  • Ensures that position and break assignments are completed for shifts.
  • Ensures proper staffing levels are met and calling in replacements as needed.
  • Completes temperature logs and quality assurance reports.
  • Ensures that all signage and menu cards are correct and food appropriately labeled.
  • Conducts service and sanitation huddles.
  • Provides managerial coverage on the floor during meal periods.
  • Ensures that standard operating procedures, HACCP rules and Maine Food Code 2014 standards are being followed in Commons.
  • Maintains the highest levels of customer service practices at all times.
  • Assists in implementing training modules and departmental procedures.
  • Ensures that sound environmental practices, composting, recycling, waste reduction are maintained.
  • Promotes and values diversity and practices two-way communication.
  • Conducts weekly supervisor/manager and MOD meetings and monthly Dining, Conferences and Campus Events town meetings.
  • Ensures that a high level of awareness of safety is maintained. Reports all injuries within 24 hours.
  • Acts as the first management level in dealing with conflicts that arise.
  • Assists in other areas of the operation as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

  • High School diploma required.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a related field desired.
  • Serve Safe certification.
  • A valid Maine driver’s license desired.

Experience

  • Minimum of six years’ food service experience.
  • Previous experience in a collegiate food service environment desired.
  • Previous supervisory experience desired.

  • Demonstrated ability to teach others.
  • Exemplary organizational and time management skills are a must.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Understands and thrives in a high-volume food service environment.
  • Ability to relate well to individuals with varying backgrounds, education and skills.
