Religious Studies - Full Professor or Advanced Associate Professor (Margaret W. Harmon Chair)
Macalester College Department of Religious Studies is hiring an advanced candidate for a full-time, tenure track position in Religious Studies, specializing in the study of modern American Christianity, to begin Fall 2026. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Religious Studies, a strong record of published research in modern American Christianity, and at least seven years of teaching experience in American Christianity and related fields. Candidates with a Ph.D. in History may be considered if they meet other qualifications.
Candidates should demonstrate broad interests in Religious Studies approaches, incorporating methods from history, philosophy, anthropology, politics, and/or critical studies, in addition to theology. They should have experience in undergraduate education and interdisciplinary interests in the humanities, fine arts, and/or social sciences.
The successful candidate will conduct research related to the history, practice, and institutions of American Christianities, and have a strong teaching record in courses on Christian traditions, as well as method and theory in Religious Studies. Preference is for scholars with research and teaching experience in the religious lives of minorities and people of color. Candidates may negotiate a shortened tenure timeline based on experience and will be named the Margaret W. Harmon Professor of Religious Studies.
Salary range: $105,000-$108,000 for advanced Associate Professor, or $116,500-$118,000 for Full Professor, possibly more based on experience, plus benefits including retirement contributions, health insurance, and tuition assistance.
