Position Highlights

Dr. Asmaa Abu Maziad's Lab is seeking a Research Assistant IV and has one open vacancy. The position is temporary and will be for one year; however, there is the potential for an extension dependent on available funding. The primary functions will be to design and execute research on understanding the structure/function relationships in podocyte cytoskeleton and mitochondrial functions in kidney diseases. This includes conducting experiments to elucidate how the podocyte cytoskeleton and its structural features influence mitochondrial functions and contribute to disease pathogenesis. The position uses cell culture, but mouse work will be used to confirm the findings.

Duties & Responsibilities

The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of mammalian cell culture and mouse work, to support standard biology research on the cell cytoskeleton and mitochndria:

  • Work independently on assigned research tasks, contributing to experimental design, protocol optimization, and the development of methods, techniques, procedures.
  • Assist the PI in performing complex experiments, following established protocols to support research objectives.
  • Utilize proficiency in basic lab techniques, molecular biological techniques, mammalian cell culture and experience with murine models.
  • Participate in the mammalian cell culture facility's daily operations.
  • Provide analysis of research data and collaborate with PI on findings.
  • Contribute to supporting materials and assist with data preparation for use in grant writing and presentation efforts.
  • Mentor students at the undergraduate level, to enhance the educational aspect of the lab.
  • Participate in regular group meetings to share insights and progress into their area of research.
  • Coordinate projects from initiation through to publication, ensuring meticulous and publication quality sample prep, data collection, and analysis.
  • Contribute towards manuscript development with adherence to established timelines.
  • Administer laboratory operations, including ordering supplies and managing shared resources, to ensure effective functionality and safety compliance.
  • Train and mentor students and research assistants/technicians, providing guidance on experimental techniques, data analysis, and overall research methodologies.

Knowledge Skills, Abilities:

  • A strong track record of written and oral communication, evidenced by a significant publication record, is essential.
  • Adept at goal-setting, project management, and have a proven ability to mentor and develop undergraduate students and trainees within a dynamic research environment.
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team to effectively manage and lead research projects from planning through to publication.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Education in Cellular and Molecular biology, or a related field is desired.
  • Up to 5 years of relevant post-graduate experience in cellular biology, and microscopy is preferred.
  • A PhD Degree is desirable.
  • Expertise in kidney research and stem cell experience.
  • Proficiency in a range of cellular assays, including SDS-PAGE, Western blotting and advanced spectrophotometric assays, such as absorbence, fluorescence, confocal, mitochnrdi aassyas and binding assays.
